hi everyone. i was just wondering do i leave the windows firewall on as well as the firewall built into avast i have avast internet security suite running windows 7. or can i just leave the 1 in avast on and disable the windows firewall.

Hi,

You can safely disable windows firewall. It is recommended that only one firewall is on.

nmb

if you’re on Windows Seven the answer is clearly NO, for others reading this thread, people who are on Vista or XP, then the answer is YES. I’ve explained why several times on this forum, so excuse me if I don’t again, browse the forums, or search Microsoft pages

The Windows 7 firewall can run side by side with AIS.
It allows further protection (inbound and also ipv6) as far I know.

Again, on Windows Seven…it’s useless to leave it on with a third party firewall activated, read some stuff:

extracted from: “Summary of new or enhanced features in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2”

Coexistence with third-party firewalls

Windows Firewall with Advanced Security consists of a set of services that provide much more than the traditional firewall. IPsec connection security rules, network service hardening, boot time filters, firewall filters, and stealth filters are all services provided by Windows Firewall with Advanced Security in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Because multiple firewall programs can be problematic due to conflicts, if you install a third-party firewall program, you need to turn off the Windows Firewall. In previous versions of Windows, turning off the firewall meant also disabling all of the related services. If the third-party program does not provide all of the same functionality, then you might be unintentionally exposing your computer to threats for which you no longer have protection. In Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, Windows Firewall with Advanced Security enables more specific disabling of its features through published application program interface (API) calls. When a third-party firewall program is installed, the installer can disable only those portions of Windows Firewall with Advanced Security that conflict with the services that are provided by the third-party program. Other Windows Firewall with Advanced Security services are left enabled, and continue to help protect your computer.

… and now go to the advanced firewall interface if you know where it is (in Seven) and see that additional security services remain activated when the firewall is turned off.

edit: also, even if Avast firewall doesn’t protect IPV6…so what??? how much IPV6 traffic have you got, just curious ;D … only very few sites use it and it’s still completely experimental…I know, after so many years, but I’m not a network specialist so I won’t comment on that. As to inbound protection, if you trust more Windows firewall, use it instead.

Thanks Logos. Living and learning. My Windows 7 firewall was already disabled. But indeed both could run side by side without problem.

This I agree, they do live well side by side, I myself forgot sometimes to turn Windows firewall off after a new install from AIS and there was no problem, but that’s just not necessary, and better when it’s off to avoid potential conflicts.
