Restoring Avast

I’m not sure if this is the place but, I operate Vista Home Premium with Avast 4.8 Home Edition. I’ve had to use Vista’s restore for another program to get to the point when it was working correctly. When I use the restore there is a message that my virus protection is not enabled. There was nothing wrong with the Avast protection and there was no way I could find to turn it back on, so I uninstalled and reinstalled. I’ve done this twice and it looks like I have to do it again (problems with the CD burner program). Since the Avast program was working correctly I don’t why it gets turned off when I go back.

Ken

Are you restoring to a point in time when Avast wasn’t installed yet?

No, Avast was working fine.

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

so I uninstalled and reinstalled. I've done this twice and it looks like I have to do it again

It looks like he already did that, but he hasn’t done a repair. Hopefully that will work… otherwise, I don’t really know.

You might want to look at your DEP settings to see if Vista is preventing it from running correctly.

Did you ever have another Anti-virus program installed on your computer?

I went to Control Panel and to the uninstall section. A pop up had the choices-Change, Uninstall & Update. No where could I find any Repair option. Therefore I restored for the third time (each a different date) to the last time everything was working fine, including Avast.
I again got the same result-A message telling me my virus protection wasn’t active. I went to Windows Security and it had a box that said to turn on Avast. I clicked on the box and got “Avast:Unknown error. Program cannot activate resident part (Standard Shield provider not found)”. I clicked on the Avast a-ball with the red circle on it and got the FAQ section. There I found the following that was the same as my problem:
Q There’s a red circle on avast a-ball in system tray and when I click on it, the error message saying “The AAVM subsytem detected a RPC error” How Do I fix this?
A Use Windows Update. Then restart, if problem persists follow instructions (1-7).
Below this it states:This solution works on Windows NT, 2000 XP & 2003 only.

Since I couldn’t solve my problem I uninstalled, downloaded the program again and installed.

After doing this, Avast works again. I’m mystified as to why when I restore to a point where it has been working that it no longer does. Also, I can’t seem to get any support from Avast!

You are seeing this, image with the options shown, do you notice there is a scroll bar to the right ?
Scroll down and you will see Repair as an option.

Whilst this isn’t required at the moment as the reinstall appears to have worked, it is there should you need it at some time in the future.
