A couple of weeks ago, I posted a curious situation where a reverse DNS lookup was performed when closing my web browser. This behavior is stopped by stopping Web Shield.
Now, I find that the same thing happens when closing my email program: a reverse DNS lookup to my ISP’s POP server is performed. This can be stopped by stopping Internet Mail.
This may not be a problem from avast!'s point of view, but is it necessary? Does it perform a security function?
Thanks. I will disable it as well. It seems to me unnecessary network traffic and a load on the DNS server. Also, it could get hung up, as noted in that post.
It would be nice if that trick worked to eliminate the reverse DNS lookup by the Web Shield when closing web pages also, but it doesn’t. The only purpose of that lookup appears to be for the “Last file scanned”, which I can live without.
