Is it possible in Internet Security 8 to revert to the previous secure email settings in the MailShield.
My problem is my email provider only supports IMAP secure email on port 143 using STARTTLS. Windows Live Mail only has options for IMAP SSL on port 993. With the older version (7) of Internet I could leave Windows Live mail as normal un-encrypted on port 143 and in the MailShield advanced settings enter any combination of port and encryption I needed. This was an ideal solution, now there is just a check box “Scan SSL email” which does not help.
I realise this is not specifically an Avast Internet Security problem, but in dumming down the UI to just a checkbox “Scan SSL email” you have removed a very useful feature!
Any advice how to use this old feature in the current version would be appreciated.
If there is no way to do this in the current UI maybe it could be re-introduced in a later version (possibly as an advanced option)?
Avast8 can now handle the SSL emails without having to modify your email settings in your email program.
If you previously had avast 7 you will have needed to change your email program, account settings to allow avast to scan SSL email, these changes need to be reversed, e.g set back to the SSL/IMAP ports and Authentication.
Delete the entries for your email accounts in the avast Mail Shield > Settings > SSL Scanning.
Hi, thanks for the replies. However I think you are both missing the point. I know Avast 8 can handle SSL emails but that is no use to me due to my email provider and windows live mail client having conflicting requirements
Email provider only supports STARTTLS over port 143
Windows livemail client only supports SSL over port 993.
I want to use the old Avast 7 method where I left email en-encrypted in the client and setup the encryption in the Mailshield advanced setting where I could select any type of encryption on any port (STARTTLS on port 143 in this case). This was much more flexible, but is no longer there. Now there is just the Scan SSL text box which does not allow me to specify the connection type.
As I said this is not specifically an Avast problem, but you have removed a useful feature by removing these setting.
Yes Avast supports TLS scanning but my email client does not support STARTTLS on port 143 which my mail provider requires, so that’s no use.
What I want to do is setup avast 8 in the old avast 7 way. No encryption in the client and using avast to do the encryption. Avast 7 had a very configurable user interface for this in the Mail Shield advanced settings, Avast 8 does not. In my opinion this is a step backwards.
I know that this has been removed from the current UI but I am wondering if I could still set it up by manually changing a config file or registry setting?
Well I thought that avast used the StartTLS option (for the means of starting a secure connection) in the previous avast 6&7 versions.
As an avast user, I don’t know if anything has changed in that regard as there are many that use IMAP on port 143 (gmail users). I don’t know there is anything that can be done manually such as editing the EmailShield.ini file in relation to the connection method. There are possibilities for adding custom ports, e.g. non-standard ports (but 143 is a standard IMAP port) and even then I don’t believe it includes adding a connection method.
I would suggest that you try creating a support ticket as this really needs input from someone on the avast team.
