I use the Avast! 4.7 Home Edition. Until recently the ball icon in my tool bar, lower right corner, always turned when I was on line and Avast! was scanning. All of a sudden, it has stopped; i.e., it no longer turns, although the software indicates that Avast! is scanning. Why has this change occurred? Have I done something wrong? Can you help me please?
In avast settings>appearance …is the “animate the icon when scanning” still ticked?

Is the counter of the providers increasing, i.e., are they scanning?
It’s strange… my icon used to swirl… now I’ve let it stopped at the system tray because I do believe the antivirus protection is ON.
Sometimes i have had the same problems. Do a repair and voilà, problem solved.
This is no longer a problem for me. I don’t re-boot the PC until it is a necessity; i.e., a new software update, etc. When an MS update caused me to re-boot, the problem went away. Thanks for everyone’s interest and offers of ideas.
Old and good restart to solve ;D
