Right click on desktop freezes windows

If that was directed at me, no can do. 8)

Thanks for the info Sand Viper but this summer I have send the laptop to acer since it was sutting down after a while and they performed a similar test with BurnInTest. The problem was to much dust, they said! But if there was a problem with CPU why it appears only when I install avast not with norton which is havier?

Before following Techs suggestions avast! by default is set to dialup connection. Hence I don’t thing that this could be the problem since I set a delay as well for the update. Also mine doesn;t freeze for minutes but just freezes. What I can try is to set the updates to manual. That would show if that causes any problem. Wouldn’t you agree?

One thing you could do to eliminate the update process from the picture, is set the vps update to manual, just temorarily. You can always update manually anytime you want to anways. If the problem presists, then the updating not is the problem.

Edit you read my mind

Well updating is not the problem. At least I thing that I have tried everything as far as the updating is concerned. The strange thing is that I can right click on a folder or a sortcut on the desktop without freezing but not on the desktop itself. Where does avast interact with the desktop?

Did you set both vps and program updates to manual? If you did them that about rules out the update process.

Yes i did. It has to do something with the desktop itself. Well either I am going to keep avast and do a couple of tricks before i start using windows or just uninstall it.

Which is your Standard Shield sensitivity level? High or Normal?

Can you post a screenshot of your desktop?
To know how to post a screenshot, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).

Which programs are set to run at startup?

All the sensitivity is set to normal.
No programs are set to run at startup appart from avast and comodo.
Here is the snap shot.

When it freezes, is it possible to left click the “a” icon on the taskbar and see what avast is scanning? Or is everthing including the mouse frozen?

The mouse is not frozen but the sand clock appears after I right click and I don’t have access to “a”.

What would happen if you turned on standard shield’s show detailed info on the advanced tab? Perhaps that would show what avast is scanning.

Other than that, I’m out of ideas.

Could you give me dirrections on how to turn that on? I can’t find it.

Ups! I found it! I will try.

After turning on the detail info and restart the PC when I right click on the desktop in order to see what it was scanning it show a file from Abobe but the strange thing was that it didn’t freeze. ???
When I turned of the detail info in order to see if that was the problem and restart again with the right click everything was working fine. I have tried a couple of times and so far no problem.
I am not jumping in conclusions so I will try again later a few more times and see what happens.
Could that check and uncheck of the detail info solved the problem? :o

Two or three questions, maybe unrelated:

 1. Did you use Norton and fully removed it? Which other Symantec products did you use?
 2. Is the two letters at right of the clock a normal thing on your language or not?
 3. Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?

I don’t think so… maybe other ‘hidden’ action that you’ve done or the computer take…

Yes. Win Fax and Ghost but they were unistalled before installing avast again.

Yes they are normal

In which field ? Programms, Security, System, Antivirus, or Internet explorer?

If it freezes again, please try to press Ctrl+Shift+Escape to invoke the Task Manager. Would that work?

You said that your update option is set to dial-up connection; I assume that means that uploading a huge file to our server might be a problem…?

I believe he is on dsl, just tried the dialup setting for trouble shooting.

I have openned the ini file but the AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds is not writen and the AssumeAlwaysConnected is default 0 but I have a DSL connection. Sould I change the value from 0 to 1 and what about the AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds why isn't it writen

Programms and System.

This setting does not work like 0 or 1, off or on.
It’s for seconds to wait after booting and trying to update.
See ‘Settings’ in my signature for full explanation.

I was just passing info on to Igor on what type of connection StavrosSerres.
