Looks like Avast work with runtime decompression. Also, low on dialers, and browser hijackers. Overall, not bad. I’d like to know what his “Settings” were on Avast though, because theres certainly many tweaks that can be done, and everyone I usually talk to about Avast, doesn’t even know about them. Guess nobody reads the manuals. :-[
The Enhanced Interface is only present in the Professional version.
Home version uses Simple User Interface.
Anyway, the virus detection is the same in both versions.
Yes, but the options AREN’T, right? He was testing packed and archived products as well, and if i’m not mistaken, you cannot set the “All Packer Formats” options in the free version if you cannot access those settings in the enhanced interface. Can you?
That probably skewed his results a good bit, especially when you consider Avast scores so low on the packed section of his test - probably because most of the options were off by default?
Technical,i must disagree with you. Avast! does scan archives if you select Scan all files,but it scans them as normal binary file thus not checking real content of archive.
To do this avast! needs to “decode” archive content to se whats really inside. Hope you understand
I have tested and compared Home and Pro and its configured this way:
Home Edition:
Explorer Extension:
Cannot be configured,but its set for maximal scan sensitivity (Scan all files,scan by content not by extension,check all packers,ignore virus targeting).
Standard Shield:
All packers excluded except Win32 and DOS self-extract executables. Packers (archives) like RAR and ZIP are scanned uppon extraction. Win32/DOS SFX executables are scanned in real-time.
Internet Mail/Outlook:
Cannot be configured as much as in Pro,but all packers are enabled for this provider by default. This is necessary due to worms that are usually packed in some form of archive.
All other settings are the same in all avast! versions.
P2P Shield:
Same in all versions of avast
Instant Messaging:
I haven’t tested this part,but i assume that it can scan all packers as well in all avast! versions. Can someone with Home Edition test this?
