It has taken me 50 min. to find how to post .I am a NUBIE and need help!!!
I have been infected by a rootkit found by a avast scan and I don’t know what to do about it. it is in my boot sector and it takes me several attempts to pull-up windowsXP. From what I can see i can’t do anything about it. I am completely lost!!!
Can anybody help me on this, I think I am going to Crash my PC.
I need help bad, please help.

I suggest:

  1. Clean your temporary files.
  2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
  3. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
  4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  5. Make a HijackThis log to post here or this analysis site. Or even submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

Thanks for the help. I wnnt to DrWeb CureIT and got about half way through when my PC went offline, however it did fine 1 virus and i followed the instructions–CURE-- and then DELETE I don’t know if it did any good because i could not reboot and get back on line. I gave up after an hour. I don’t know how i got on line today?? I did read in DrWeb CureIT that it is impossible to remove a virus from the Boot Sector so I may be out of luck but I will try stept #2 and hope?? and everything else before I give up. I don’t want to have to buy another PC. Wish me LUCK I’m going to need it.

You don’t have to buy another computer, but if you can’t get specialized help, maybe you can format and start from the beginning, installing Windows and avast… and so on.
