Rootkit, Malware and Trojans

Hi, a few days ago I got the three malicious infections Rootkit, Malware and Trojans. I’ve been using avast for years now and it autoupdates by default of course so always up to date. I was using XP SP3 no other antivirus programs, no other firewall or any other program in this category that would interfere with it. However these infections made their way through Avast. I was alerted that it has been blocked but still it got through. I don’t remember the first side effect, but later when I ran a scan with Malwarebytes and it detected 10 of these infections. I had to restart and my PC could no longer get into windows and would restart in loops, could not even get into safe mode. The virus actually came from an IP along the lines of 199.xx.xxx or 99.xxx I didn’t record the IP address but the virus I got was from a link on one/click/moviez . Avast has done a great job in blocking viruses but this time it failed. This is a post to notify the virus team for improvements.

Also if someone can comment on how they slipped through Avast! that would be greatly appreciated. I’ve used other antiviruses in the past starting with Norton (paid) which was horrible from resource consumption to lack of protection, then I used highly recommended BitDefender (paid) and while it didn’t use up much resources and did a good job for the majority of the time, there was one time that it failed me. After that I started using Avast Free and it has been low on resource consumption and a very good protection, however once again like all antivirus it has failed me this one time. I just want to know is this typical to expect that eventually even if I paid for Avast Pro that it would fail once sometime? This has been my experience with all Antiviruses thus far.

Another question is when Avast is running, is it scanning all my computer for viruses? Because I’ve had it occur to me once before that when I did a manual scan it found a few viruses, which I had deleted or moved to chest. I just don’t understand how it could say it is blocked it, and this automatic scan that it’s doing on my hard drive never have had picked those infected files up? Not only till I do a manual scan I find them. What is going on there?

No security program have 100% detection, and never will…

During the first three months of 2011 an average of 73,000 new strains of malware have been created every day:

Yes I agree that this is the case.

I would still like an answer to the question below.

only those parts of the computer in use
File System Shield — Real-time protection against viruses and other malware threats. Scans files as they run on your computer to keep viruses from being able to execute.

Situations like yours are why I graduated to Avast AIS to add the sandbox layer. When one of the new nasties get past the shields, just grab a cold one, empty the sandbox, and resume the rat killin’
