Where is this found in Avast 5? Also what is the difference between rootkit scan and boot time scan?
There is no special rootkit log wrong…
Rootkit (a type of malware) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit
Boot time Avast Antivirus Scanning
Avast Antivirus offers a “boot time” virus scan of your PC. This allows the antivirus engine to scan all of the files on your hard drive before any other programs load - useful in cases where you have an infection which cannot be cleaned because the “file is in use”
Booting
In computing, booting (also known as “booting up”) is a bootstrapping process that starts operating systems when the user turns on a computer system. A boot sequence is the initial set of operations that the computer performs when power is switched on. The bootloader typically loads the main operating system for the computer.
Have you had a look in the avast help file ?
Press F1 when the UI is open, there is a section on Boot-Time scan in the Scanning for viruses heading.
The rootkit scan is specific to finding rootkits (nothing else) and runs 8 minutes after avast starts.
There is a special rootkit log it is here, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\aswAr.log (for XP users, for other OSes you will need to search).
