Rough wakeup

So, I’m not exactly sure where to post this as the symptoms are kind of strange. I just decided to go with the general avast! section.

Last night I left my PC signed in while it downloaded a game from Steam, and when I checked on it this morning it woke up with a weird, old Windows XP admin login window over my desktop background instead of the standard XP login area with the users list. So that was kind of weird.

Then, when it signed in, avast! and ZoneAlarm were both shut down, as well as Steam. When I tried to start up avast!, I got a “This is not a valid Win32 application” error. When I tried to start up Steam, it gave me a blob file error or whatever the hell Steam does.

Anyhow, at this point I restarted and everything seemed fine. Standard XP login screen. ZoneAlarm, avast! and Steam all booted properly with no errors.

I started running a full system scan on it while I’m at work, but I thought I’d also post here to see if anyone knows what exactly happened there. Is this something I should be worried about, does this just happen sometimes, is my computer just grumpy in the morning? Does it need some coffee?

Any input would be much appreciated.

It seems likely it because of the last Avast program update, assuming you upgraded to version 7.0.1451 in the last couple of days (or have Avast on automatic program update). The newest version of Avast has some problems with XP.

Have a look at this thread:

Most of us have gone back to version 7.0.1426

Why, yes I did just upgrade to 7.0.1451 - and a lot of the symptoms in that thread sound awful familiar. I’ll try rolling it back when I get home from work.

Thanks a ton for your help.

If you roll back using system restore then disable the self protection mode first
