When I try running Avast I keep getting an RPC error.I cannot seem to cure this error or even activate the resident protection.I have tried repairing & re-installing Avast to no avail HELP ???
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
When I went to re-install the program from a new copy from the avast site it uninstalled the one on there before I installed the new copy.Since then I have also had this error message on windows startup “Unauthorized modification of ashServ.exe” also it said “running the program could be dangerous run anyway?” I only had Avast.
I don’t believe it uninstalls the current one rather installs over the top.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD so you can find it later.
Now try, uninstall using add remove programs, reboot, run the Uninstall Utility, reboot, install, reboot.
You may be asked the location of avast by the uninstall utility if you installed in the default folder, it is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
Which program is sending these error messages?
Can you post a screenshot?, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).
The other accompanying error message I forgot is “setup.ovr needs to close” if that helps. I can manually download a virus database update & install it but the auto update wont work anymore. If I try to update through Avast itself then the program wants to close & I get the error messages.I did uninstall Avast Antivirus & re-install but the problem persisted,I saved the installation to my hard drive & also ran the installation whilst on Avast’s home page but to no avail. In the short time I was without protection about 35 viruses managed to get in,at least I have got Avast running again.
Please, post the last 150-200 files of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Well hope this helps.I have now set the update for the program & virus database to manual to prevent the error messages.
Solved the problem.Replaced the “setup.ovr” file from another computer which had the same version as me and it worked.Thank you all for your trouble in helping. :-*
Strange solution but anyway…
I’ve looked at your setup file and do not find the ‘cause’ of the problem. Sorry.
