I just did an avast! update (I was already using 4.8, so it was a smaller update of some sort) and now I get “The AAVM subsystem detected an RPC error” and avast! will not start. I went through the FAQ (http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-red-circle.html) and it did not help. The service is already set to Automatic and trying to start it results “Error 5: Access is denied”. I am currently logged in as the same user I was before avast! updated and I have admin rights. I am running Windows XP Pro x64 Edition, but I haven’t had any problems with avast! in the past. Any thoughts?
Did you try a reboot?
If so (and no go) try a repair. Control panel>add/remove programs>avast>change>repair.
I have repaired 3 times and rebooted 4 times. I even completely uninstalled and installed from a fresh download, same problem.
Check the other topic you posted in, I replied there, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=35509.msg298552#msg298552.
May be best to answer the question I asked here though.
That’s weird.
Sounds like something has possibly disabled a service. Just check that in services.msc the RPC is started, and set to automatic. (I think it would be, because so much else depends on it you’d be getting other symptoms if it wasn’t.)
Have you “tweaked” anything?
Have you installed or updated any other programs recently, installed SP3, or had any malware warnings? What firewall are you using? Any other security applications installed, or run recently?
(Not an expert, but sometimes stumble upon the answer by having borked my own system a couple of times…)
