On Access Protection Control will not start. Error message is
The AAVM subsystem detected an RPC error
I am running a (brand new ) Home XP system
I followed the FAQ advice re this problem. The FAQ said I should see Avast in Services and RPC. RPC is there, starting is automatic, and it seems fine. Avast is not listed in Services. I have applied all Windows XP udpates

So, avast is not installed or, at least, not properly installed.
You can uninstall, boot, install again, boot… to see if a second installation works.
But, do you have another antivirus installed in this computer? Have you already installed one (which?) in it? Maybe you have a conflict…
Can you start manually the avast! service (C:\ … \Avast4\ashServ.exe)?
thanks - reinstalling it seems to have fixed it
