RPC server is unavailable error message ?

Guys,

Just today, my Avast Premier has seemingly stopped working properly.

On the icon on the task bar, a little red dot appears and says that ‘Avast is UNSECURE’, and when I try to click on update program or definitions, I get a message saying ‘The RPC Server is Unavailable’.

I have never seen this happen in all the years I have had Avast.

Can anyone shed some light on this and how I can get my Avast working and secure again ? This is on an XP computer, if that makes any difference ?

Thanks for any help

Have you tried avast repair and reboot?

It’s been a while…How does one ‘repair’ the program again ?

Okay, I forgot about the ‘add/remove’ programs step.

So, I did that, clicked on the ‘change’ button, and I do not get the usual page where it would say, 'update, ‘repair’, ‘modify’. I only get a page that says ‘change’, and what options I want to change, and what folder the changes will go into.

Nothing about ‘repair’, and I do remember that option being there, when I did the ‘add/remove’ programs step, in the past.

What do I do from here ?

Thanks…

Yes, I did the steps to get to the ‘repair’ setup, but it does not come up. I only get a page that says ‘change’. Nothing else. No ‘repair’ option, at all. :-[

This is what comes up when you select Avast in the Programs and Features option:

If you don’t see that than maybe it’s time for a Clean Install of Avast:

Right, that is the screen I used to get. Now, all it shows is ‘Change’, nothing else.

Initially in the Control Panel > Programs you have two options Uninstall and Change.

If you select the Uninstall Option at that point your should get the screen that is in Bob’s Image.
Is that what you did ?

Hi. When I click on the Avast icon, in the ‘add/remove’ programs list set up, I get only Change and Remove. Not Uninstall. When I click ‘change’ I get that Change screen I mentioned. I think when I clicked ‘Remove’, once, a pop up asked me if I want to remove the program ? So, I cancelled it. I remember, I used to get that screen that Bob showed, but it does not come up now. Again, this is on an XP computer, but I do remember always getting Bob’s screen, too, but I don’t remember pressing the ‘remove’ button, to get it. :-\

Well I don’t know if that has changed recently or not, as I too recall being able to get to the Repair option from the Change function, but not now.

If you choose the Remove button you should then get the screen that Bob posted.

See my attached image, which comes from my XP System and selecting Remove pulls up that screen I have attached.

You don’t say what avast version you have installed ?
I don’t know if that would have an impact on the screen being displayed.

Will do ! When I get home later, I will click the ‘remove’ button and hope that the correct ‘repair’ screen pops up.

My version is Avast Premier 18.8.2356 (build 18.8.4084.0)

OK, let us know how you get on.

The main concern was that you might have an old version of avast that could have had a different screen/function.

Okay, here is the latest update (and thanks for helping, guys) : I clicked the remove button, and thankfully, I got the screen Bob had shown. So, I clicked on repair, and the program ran and gave me the end message of success, including the red dot disappearing. I then clicked OK, and the screen returned to my main desktop screen.

Now, here is the weird part : all of a sudden, my screen blanked out and my computer rebooted. It came back to my desktop screen again, and then blanked out again, and rebooted. Did this a third time. On the fourth time, I quickly typed in ‘chkdsk’, and the computer went into chkdsk mode. After that finished, I ran a quick registry fix program, which showed 498 errors ! After that was done, I waited a a few minutes, and decided to try to shut down the computer normally, fearing it would reboot again. So, I did that and have yet to return to the computer, at this point.

Obviously, I will check it out, later, to see if it reboots on its’ own again, but that is what is happening, so far…

Haven’t used XP in ages so the rest of the help needs to come from those that still use that ancient OS.

Very frustrating, you may need to preform a clean reinstall (if you haven’t already done that) as Bob suggested in Reply #6.

Ouch. Well, if I do need to re-install, does that mean I have to do the re-register process, too ?

If you do which is likely, ensure you have your license file, etc. before you start.

If you didn’t save a copy use the Resend avast License https://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php, you will need to enter the email that you used when purchasing the license, e.g. the one that the original email with the link was sent.

Guys, I looked over the steps to take from Bob’s post, and for me, not being tech savvy, it’s a bit daunting. Is there no easier way to uninstall, if I need to ? I see there is an uninstall button on the ‘repair’ page. Isn’t that the way to go ? Or are those uninstall steps the same as Bob’s post ?

Thanks…

The uninstall button is the first part of the clean install. Simply follow the directions. They are laid out step by step.
