RT Click Scan Produces Error

Hello all.

Just installed the latest Home version today.

When I right click in Windows Explorer to scan for a virus, I get the message, “Scan was completed with error. Error: Unknown Error”

Probably my mistake but I’m a noobie when it comes to avast!

Can you help?

Exactly what were you trying to scan, file (what type, text, html, zip, exe, dll, etc.), folder, partition, HDD? If you can provide the path, e.g. c:\windows\system\scanthisfile…, etc.

What is your OS?

Thanks for the reply.

OS is XP

It applies to any file. When I rt click and select the scan mode a Avast 4.6 box pops up and states:

Number of tested files 0

Tested file:Initializing engine, please wait …

Then I get the message I stated above.

I would suggest that you try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

No go. I’ll uninstall and try again.

Thanks again.

Avast Uninstall Utility, find it here

After you have uninstalled, run the avast uninstall utility, reboot and then reinstall.

Found the problem. It was PowerDesk Pro Version 6.

I uninstalled it and installed Version 5 and all is well. Another thing I cannot explain.

Thanks all.

Neither can I explain it, but thanks for letting us know, it may possibly help someone else experiencing a similar problem and have PowerDesk installed.
