Hi all
I have something that is more a nuisance than anything. Since uninstalling Norton Antivirus 2002 it pops up now and again like this

C:\Docume~1\Barryg~1\Desktop\GUP721EN.exe
RunDll32 advpack.dll,launchINFSection C:\32WINDOWS\system32\S32EVNT1,DLL. An Installable Virtual Device
failed Dll initialization. Choose to terminate the application.

Underneath it says Close or Ignore

If I ignore I can usually open the program if I click close I can’t. Can anybody help with this please

A visit to Norton’s site and try to find the removal tool, to clean up the mess of the uninstall or get RejZor’s avast! External Control program, there is an Norton Removal element in it.

You could also run hijackthis and find the run command and fix it.

Hi David
Have just tried this and so far so good. Norton is a real entwiner isn’t it. So far it hasn’t appeared and things are still working OK. I did make a back-up just incase though.

  1. (Optional) If NAV is the only Symantec product installed on your computer:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type regedt32 and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens. (This is a different version of the Registry Editor than you used in the previous steps.)
    3. Click the Window menu, and then click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine
    4. Navigate to the following subkey. (You need to double-click each key to open it):

       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Current ControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
    5. In the right pane, double-click VDD. The Multi-String Editor opens.
    6. In the Data box, select the path which includes Symantec, press Delete, and then click OK.
    7. Exit the Registry Editor.

  2. (Optional) Most NAV entries are now removed from the registry, although some traces of it still remain. These traces have little impact on how your computer operates, and it is not necessary to remove them. If you feel confident about editing the registry, and want to remove as many traces as possible, then continue with the following steps:

    1. Click the Edit menu, and then click Find.
    2. Search for NAVNT, and then delete all entries.
    3. If NAV is the only Symantec product on the system, then you may also search for Symantec and Norton, and then delete all the entries. If there are other Symantec products on the system, then be careful to delete only those items related to Norton AntiVirus for Windows NT, or the other Symantec products may cease to work.

That’s why DavidR asked you to get the uninstall tool from Symantec. It cleans the registry of all the things the standard install leaves behind.
Remember, most people aren’t comfortable or qualified to use regedit. ;D

Hi Bob

Thank you, I did realise That was what David meant, and I had tried it but somehow it didn’t quite work, and rather having Norton put something else on my computer, I am quite happy to play in the registry. I always make a backup of what I am doing and somehow it makes me feel good when I get something right. I haven’t got a trace of Norton or Symantec on my computer now and I am more than happy with Avast.

Although Avast is an Antivirus program, on my web site I do say it is something that would give pleasure to anybody that has it, because it is so different from the others, especially as you can change the skins everyday if you want to.

Also notice I was in the other part of the registry Regedt32 where the traces where left.

Barry, can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD

The problem (if any…) must be there
