I have a Windows ME machine that starts the Windows ME welcome screen and just hangs there. I want to check for a virus. I can not get into Windows to install Avast, so I’m wondering if I boot from a boot disk if I can run Avast from the command prompt?

I doubt it.

You could try and download the avast! freeware DOS version from the website. Check it out to see if there is anything else you would need, latest pattern file, etc. If you can’t get on-line, see if a friend can download it and copy it to FDD or CD.

More information about avast for DOS could be found in Links (section avast) in my signature or even on FAQ (at the same place)
