Rust game won't start

Hello,

I’m having a problem where Avast Free Antivirus is blocking the game “Rust” (https://rust.facepunch.com/) from launching.

The game, when launched from Steam, will display an EasyAntiCheat splash screen, then, after a minute or two, the splash screen disappears. Then, the game executable will either silently stop (and the game’s status in Steam changes from running to stopped), OR, the game executable “rustclient.exe” will remain running, but be in a hung state, and I have to use Task Manager to stop it.

If I disable all Avast shields from the Avast taskbar icon, and try again, the game launches as expected.

I’ve added the entire game folder “C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Rust” to the exclusions settings, as well as the “C:\Program Files (x86)\EasyAntiCheat” folder. But this is not enough, clearly.

I really don’t want to have to disable Avast entirely every time I play the game. What else could I change to make this work?

Karl

You can report a suspected FP (File/Website) here: https://www.avast.com/false-positive-file-form.php

Does it qualify as a false positive if Avast doesn’t give me any notifications about it though? Nor tries to quarantine it? The game just silently fails as long as Avast’s shields are enabled.

And why doesn’t adding Rust as an exception work?

I would say that it may not qualify as a false positive as there is no avast alert, there does appear to be some sort of conflict.

I certainly wouldn’t want to disable avast completely, but try and identify which shield may be in conflict.

Enable Avast again and try first disabling the Behaviour Shield and see if that is in conflict and report back.

Your exception in your first post is also incorrect, it should be C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Rust*
