Safe Finder

So my father was downloading some file he was directed to by a friend and while successful got Safe Finder on his Mac in the process. Safe Finder, as far as I understand it, hijacks your browser’s homepage and generates pop-ups. I helped him remove it but my question is how one gets infected. Do you just have to click something or, my guess, need to download and open some executable which installs the malware.

Thanks as always

ETA: I want to add that my father’s Safari is set to unzip and open (I think) downloads so could it be that he downloaded the malware which was opened by Safari/Mac?

It is often bundled with programs you download

You may do a scan with Malwarebytes for Mac to make sure all crap is gone > https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/mac/

Thanks. I know malware can come bundled but must you execute a program for it to infect you or can just unzipping something do it? And do you have any idea how well malwarebytes works with a Mac? I tried it on my father’s mac once or twice before and it scanned in literally seconds making me question how effective it is. I use it myself for my PC so I’m familiar with it.

Thanks
