Hi two days ago I turned on an XP professional computer I haven’t used in awhile. Of course one of the first things I did was upgrade the Avast program, then I unistalled some programs that I no longer wanted on the computer and then did a windows update from the windows update sight. After the 40+ security and .net updates update asked to restart. Upon restart I received an error that ntoskrnl was missing or corrupt. I reinstalled it from xp professional install cd. No boot still but said autochk missing. I reinstalled it and still no boot. Modified boot.ini as per microsoft (now it apears there are two installs of XP Pro), still no boot and freeze on aswrvrt upon safe mode boot then blue screen. Found that a number of people received help when freeze on aswrvrt from your forum so read through some posts. Consequently, I ran Reatogo-x-pe and FRST as per instructions you gave others, and have attached FRST.txt. The only file I believe I changed to a previous version was the ntoskrnl.exe. The original is in in the system32 folder as ntoskrnl.old with a newer time stamp than the one currently I ran to give aswrvrt freeze. Thanks for any help!

I have posted a solution here that might be able to help.

Unfortunately the fix you suggested did not work in my case. My system does not have the second driver file you mentioned, just the aswRvrt. Any other suggestions?

Hi this will disable all Avast services and drivers at start up

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix.
On completion try a normal boot
