Same Fake avast! Upgrade Pop-up

Hello,

I really like this forum (unfortunate that I have to use it, but great!) so I hope that someone can be of assistance to me. I recently posted on another person’s thread concerning the same issue that they were having.

Attached is a pop-up that comes to screen every time I reboot or come out of hibernation. Though it looks legit, and other people (even from avast!) have posted that it is, when I clicked to download the new version of avast! nothing happened. Concerned, I ran a scan of my computer to find that I had 5 infected files from the date and time of supposed dl. I moved them to the virus chest and deleted them. Also, there was another file that couldn’t be removed that was identified as a decompression bomb in another user’s files. I tried to manually delete it, but after many failed attempts, gave up because I wasn’t that concerned because avast! more than likely mis-identified it.

After reading other posts on this same issue, I downloaded MBAM and ran both a quick scan and full scan and found nothing. Can someone please help to identify where this pop-up is located on my machine and assist in getting rid of it. The only viable solution I have seen is to uninstall avast! completely and use another av like MSE.

Thoughts…questions?

Please help!

What makes you think this is a fake popup? avast! 4.8 is slowly getting obsolete, so i suggest you install avast! 5.x instead. It’s simply faster and better program.

Thanks for the reply!

I think this is fake because when I clicked to dl, nothing happened. After nothing happened, I scanned my computer and found infected files that weren’t present before dl.

I will install avast! 5 and see what happens.

Thanks, again.

Newest version is 5.1.889.110120?

This may be overly suspicious but why does it redirect to CNET Download dot com. Why not just download from avast! website?

If you dont want to download from cnet, download it from here : http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe

Thanks, nmb. I think everything is good. Will reco avast! to all!!

You’re welcome.
