same viruses and trojans being found over and over

I’m not exactly sure whats goin on but I figure it cant hurt to ask…

Avast on-access scanner randomly gives me the message that the same virus and trojan horse has been found so I click ‘Move to chest’. I’m pretty sure its the same file but it keeps popping up and prompting me to move it to the chest when I already have. The trojan horse is called Win32:PurityScan-AD and the virus/worm is Win32:VB-AXQ.

First, the message pops up that a virus has been found in : C:\Documents and Settings\KARN\vsetup.exe[MoleBox]

then the message that immediately follows is the one that says a trojan horse was found in: C:\Documents and Settings\KARN\winstall.exe[MoleBox]

Its the same files that I’m moving to the chest everytime. Whats going on? Its getting kinda annoying…not that I’m complaining that these viruses are being found and disabled ;D

Did you tried to do a full system scan ? Can you schedule a boot-time scan ( Start avast! antivirus → Menu → Schedule boot-time scan ) ?
If the boot time scan doesn’t help I suggest you to do a scan with some free anti-malware program - a-squared Free , AVG Antispyware for example :wink:

Also before doing a scan you may want to disable your System Restore :wink:

Can you delete the files in My Documents manually? Do they come back?

You may have a Trojan downloader which avast! does not recognise downloading these thing again when avast! removes them.

Do you have a third-party firewall? If so, look for any suspicious processes with connections rights in or out.

If you don’t, download any of the following you don’t already have, install and update:

Download a free firewall, I’d recommend Zone Alarm, but don’t install yet.

Go off line (pull the internet plug) and run scans with avast! plus the programs above.

I tried deleting the file manually and it appears to be gone.

I did all those things you listed Frank and the toolbar also appears to be gone…but it still appears on the Add/remove programs list on the Control Panel.

Here’s how to remove an invalid entry from Add/Remove:

To remove a program reference viewable in the Add/Remove Programs tool: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). [Start>Run] 2. Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall 3. Locate the key to be deleted by locating the key name created by the program. If the name of the key is not apparent, browse through each key and note the value for DisplayName. This is the viewable string in the Add/Remove Programs tool. 4. Using the Registry menu, export the selected registry key to make a backup. Store the .reg file in a safe location in case you need to import it at a later date. 5. Delete the selected registry key and its values. Do not delete the entire Uninstall key. 6. Quit Registry Editor. 7. Verify that the reference in the Add/Remove Programs tool is no longer visible.

 If you continue to use P2P programs, like Limewire, you will periodically get trojans, etc .
 Better to switch to the "safer" & "cleaner" Shareaza from www.shareaza.com .
