Hi,
Sorry for bad english, french. ;D
Avast last version, pro, with windows seven.
I use the sandbox to surf with firefox. Not “autosandbox”, but always use Firefox in the sandbox.
I have an issue with the “expert parameters”: When I check in “exclusions” - “all the parameters” (bookmarks, addons, etc…), and then I add a bookmark in firefox “sandboxed”, the bookmark appear in firefox “not sandboxed”. That’s good. 8)
But, when I check, in the “expert parameters” only “bookmark” to be not virtualized, a bookmark added in firefox “sandboxed” doesn’t appear in firefox “not sandboxed”.
Why?
I prefer to check only “bookmark”, because I think that it’s better in security than “all the parameters”?
Thanks a lot for your answers!
I saw your question yesterday while surfing on my iPad, and I have to admit I was too lazy to turn my laptop on to check it :-[ But a quick check now learns that it seems that you are right. I want to check a few things further before I inform pk ( the Sandbox Developer ), but I thought I should answer you first.
Under Exclusions next to the top box its says add-ons, extensions etc.
However, down below there is no box to check for add-ons, extensions.
The main reason that I stopped using the Sandbox for Firefox was that the updates that I did to the add-ons, extensions while in sandbox mode even with all the boxes checked under Exclusions did not show up in normal mode.
It included things like adding new reminders and todos as well as deleting them and changing them in the ReminderFox addon. None of this would show up when I returned to the normal mode.
Changes to Reminders and ToDos are stored in a file that as I recall is in the User’s directory path maybe under Profiles. In any case I am sure that you guys can find it.
However, what should also be noted is that I have three computers on my home network all using ReminderFox. I was able to figure out how to update the Reminders and ToDos on ReminderFox at one computer and have those changes show up in ReminderFox in the other two computers through my home network running W7 SP1. I chose to do that than by using iCal as I recall it is named.
So getting ReminderFox to update on all three computers when only one of them is running Firefox sandboxed or even all of them running in the Sandbox mode might be a bit tricky. Right now I just have ReminderFox point to the ReminderFox data file which is located on a drive and location within that drive that is accessible by all three computers on the network. It is not a security concern for me given my user situation of the small network.
While I would love to use Firefox sandboxed the fact that I don’t doesn’t concern me that much as evidenced by the fact that I don’t recall posting this stuff previously, though I may have mentioned it once months ago.
So this works fine for me on this issue at this time.
However if the changes were made to Avast to allow for the seamless movement of Firefox back and forth form inside to outside the sandbox it would probably encourage more Firefox users to want to buy an Avast license.
I agree.
I switched to sandboxie because of this problem, but I would prefer to use only one soft (avast!) for all security concerns.
Perhaps in a very next version?
i just got an email back from pk in which he thanks you guys for the info But currently he is in Redmond testing Avast! with the latest Windows 8 build, so we have to be patient
@Fredov59: you’re right - checking only “Bookmarks” option (when other 2 options were unchecked) did still virtualize bookmarks. Actually, you must also check “History” to get it work. This bug is present for FF v3.x+, I’ve already fixed it, thanks!
@Nesivos:
Under Exclusions next to the top box its says add-ons, extensions etc.
However, down below there is no box to check for add-ons, extensions.
If you check the first option “All settings (incl. extensions, add-ons, etc.” then your whole FF profile is excluded from virtualization. You’re right, it may not be clear - maybe it should be renamed to “All settings bellow plus extensions…”, or “Entire web-browser configuration”. Hmm.
The main reason that I stopped using the Sandbox for Firefox was that the updates that I did to the add-ons, extensions while in sandbox mode even with all the boxes checked under Exclusions did not show up in normal mode.
I agree, but it’s not quite easy to merge normal and sandboxed webbrowsers (with auto-updating). I’m going to fix it somehow in avast7.
ReminderFox network sharing
I’ve already added network virtualization to early avast7 build, so this will be supported.
