Sandbox and WebReputation Plugin for Firefox

#1 QUESTION: I just discovered I have an Avast Web Reputation Plugin addon in my Firefox, and I wish to “uninstall” it…BUT…the only option showing that is NOT greyed out is the “Disable” feature. So is “disabling” it the only option I really have?

#2 QUESTION: With the newest version of Avast, for the last couple of days, when I download YouTube videos and try to play them, Avast pops up and tells me I must use a “SANDBOX”. I couldn’t figure out why it was doing this, so…I uninstalled Avast & reinstalled it “3 times” before discovering Avast actually had a new feature called “Sandbox”…and that nothing was actually wrong with my videos I had downloaded after all.

Since I download videos all of the time, there is no way I will allow Avast to place each YouTube video I download into a Sandbox before I watch it. :stuck_out_tongue: Therefore, how do I DISABLE “Sandbox” on the Avast application?

P.S. I looked at the Avast application, so if I missed directions for disabling the Sandbox, I’m sorry.

ADDENDUM: I just noticed that my “Refresh” (reload/stop combination icon) is missing and that Web Reputation icon is in its place! I can’t find my “Refresh” button even in the customization area.

EDIT about a half hour later…
(1) I “disabled” the Web Reputation Plugin.
(2) I uninstalled my Smart Stop/Reload addon since I couldn’t find it anywhere once that Web Reputation Plugin took its place, and reinstalled it from Mozilla (yea!).
b I still want to know how to get rid of the Avast “Sandbox”, however…or at least disable it for when trying to watch my downloaded videos![/b] ::slight_smile:

Uninstall should be from the avast User Interface, Additional Protection, WebRep and not from the browser as you have now found.

Have you restarted firefos for the changes to be applied ?

Of all of the information you have in your signature, not a word about what version of avast you are using ?

@DavidR
I uninstalled the WebRep and disabled the Sandbox, and then I restarted Firefox, so those things are finally taken care of.
Regarding me not mentioning what version of Avast I am using in my signature…I do have my version listed, but did you want me to add that I use “Avast 5”? I honestly don’t know if it is still called “Avast 5” because the application doesn’t state that anywhere now (at least, I can’t find it). However, my CCleaner states it is Avast 5, so does that help you?

QUESTION:
Now that I’ve “disabled” the Avast Sandbox, I have a new question.
Up until I installed this new version of Avast, whenever I’ve opened videos on my desktop in the last 4 years, they would open almost instantly…“no longer than 2 seconds to open”. HOWEVER, since I installed the new Avast version, when I click on a video to be opened by my Media Classic PLayer, it now takes “8 seconds” for the player to appear and then an additional 2 seconds before playing. SO…is the Avast Sandbox still somehow being used even though I have it disabled - OR - is Avast somehow doing a “thorough” scan of the video before allowing me to watch it?

P.S. “8 seconds” to have my video player appear may not sound like a very long time, but it is when you’re used to having it open in “2 seconds” and also open videos frequently when searching for the correct video. Am I incorrectly assuming that Avast is the cause of this issue and perhaps it’s just a coincidence that my player is taking a longer time to open up after the installation of this new Avast version? ???
(Of note is that I had just finished watching a video on my desktop before installing the new version of Avast and the video player had opened quickly as usual just before the Avast installation.)

  1. I missed it in your signature, but was also wondering if this might have been related to updating from an earlier version (not necessary to include in the signature) or if it was a clean install to the latest version of avast 6.0.1203.

So if you did an update or an install over the top of avast5 and you are experiencing problems then generally we would suggest a clean reinstall.

  1. Re the Sandbox, those is the AutoSandBox and personally I would leave that running, but the avastUI, Additional Protection, AutoSandbox, Expert Settings ans uncheck the option to use it.

If there is a common application that is being pinged by the autosandbox (not the changing video), then you can elect to open normally and check the Remember my answer for this program.

RE: Removing Avast before an install OR installing over the current app
I did “clean” installs (all 3 of them), even using my Search Everything application to go into my registry and delete all references to Avast after my browser had restarted from removing Avast each time…and before reinstalling Avast.

RE: Disabling the Sandbox
On discovering this Sandbox for the first time, I noticed the “red outline” around my video player, and that it took 8 seconds for my video player to appear.

In viewing your thumbnail, I first tried changing that option to “normally” & also checked “remember my answer for this program”…BUT it still took 8 seconds to open up my video player.

Next…I went into the “Additional Protection” area and unchecked the box for usage of the Sandbox (disabled it)…BUT…after disabling the Sandbox, it CONTINUED to take 8 seconds for my Media Classic Player to appear…which was NOT normal!

WOW…amazing! I uninstalled the newest version of Avast just now (for the 4th time) and then opened some videos on my Media Player Classic, and - VOILA - the player popped up “INSTANTLY” (within 1 second)…and what a great feeling to see it work normally, again! ;D So this means that Avast WAS somehow STILL delaying my video player from opening up for a whole 8 seconds even though the Sandbox was disabled. :frowning:
(NOTE: I don’t have Avast installed currently and that will continue to make me nervous until I reinstall it…if I reinstall it.)

HOWEVER, I still have a question. I do wish to continue using Avast EXCEPT I can’t “if” it is going to continue delaying my videos from playing instantly; I’ll need to find a different antivirus app even though I surely don’t want to. SO…can someone tell me if Avast is somehow placing my videos in a Sandbox anyway even though I have it disabled? Why else would it be forcing my video to wait 8 seconds before opening? Perhaps there’s a glitch somewhere? Has anyone else tried opening their videos and notice, also, the 8-second delay before opening?
(This has never-ever-ever happened before until with this version of Avast. :o)
