under sandbox> web browsers> it says “automatically detect default locations for saved/downloaded files to these locations outside the sandbox” and this is checked off in my Avast UI. can someone please break this down and explain what this means to me. Ive researched online about the avast sandbox feature and have read frequently that it is nothing more than eye candy. How reliable is the sandbox feature from protecting against infection while using a browser? I watched a video online that showed the sandbox didnt catch an infection, is this always possible?
The sandbox does not “catch” (detect) infections.
It is an isolated environment that nothing goes out (unless specified, like you can set in avast sandbox).
Out of the sandbox, the contents are still completely scanned by avast.
This option helps you to work with sandboxed webbrowser easily – if sandbox detects that you’re going to download a regular file from internet (that this file wasn’t downloaded by malware), then it excludes the file from sandboxing (i.e. it’ll be saved on your disk instead of sandbox; or in other words: you’ll probably want to keep this file permanently (PDF/ZIP/…) so it was directly saved on your disk). If, however, someone runs that downloaded application from your sandboxed webbrowser, then this application will be virtualized automatically (it doesn’t mean that if this file was excluded from sandbox, it won’t be executed in the sandbox).
I will try to review help files in avast7 so it could be more understandable for our users.
I can’t use avast sandbox as I can’t save or open .xls files generated in my internal network. I couldn’t manage to open/save the file in IE or FF. These .xls files are report files that I need to use outside of the sandbox.
Hi Tech, I heard about your XLS problem in past, but now I can’t find any detailed information about this issue. If you have time, would you mind write me more info about it? OS, how file is generated, is it saved by webbrowser, webbrowser version, can be that XLS file opened by excel from your browser? or will excel run without opening that file? Are there any single steps how I can simulate it here? Thanks.
OS: Windows 7 Pro 32 bits.
File is generated by an ERP program running in a server and generate .pdf, .doc, .xls, .csv files. Outside of the sandbox, I can open or save the file (which originally is located in the temp folder of the browser/windows).
The interface of the ERP program is web based, I can open it in any browser: IE 9, FF 8.0.1, Chrome 15 (always the latest stable version).
If I’m outside of the sandbox, the file can be opened by Excel or saved to the disk for lather opening/editing.
I’ve thought it should work as a file being downloaded and if avast is configurated correctly, it should allow opening/save the file. But it’s not.
Steps to simulate? Can you connect remotely to my computer using TeamViewer?
I got into all the problems KEVBECK was having with his Avast setup and, frankly, the poor responses to his queries was something I could have found earlier, before I paid for a service which I have been unable to open since. Kevbeck has much more patience than I will ever have and I’m glad I’ve only bought one licence for 12 months. I asked a couple of questions of someone called rojan from customer service, he referred me to that silly phone number which only works if youre NOT in the UK and then refused to answer any more of my queries.
Well done AVAST.
