The FREE version of avast includes AUTO-Sandbox in version 8.x, which was replaced by DEEPSCAN in version 2014. However, the FREE version of avast does not offer you “on-demand” sandboxing of individual programs. If you wish to sandbox individual programs of your choice, when you wish, you can use Sandboxie to do that.
Sandboxing creates a virtual environment, which can be used for testing programs, and which, via closing/emptying the sandbox, can be simply “tossed-away” when the testing is done. You can similarly “cast off” a virus/malware, should any make their way past your protection programs. It offers a highly effective level of security, over and above your anti-virus program.
Avast and Sandboxie are compatible in most cases. A recent exception is Firefox 27 & 28: If you find that FF won’t open in Sandboxie 4.0.8 (the current “stable” version), you may need to advance to 4.0.9 BETA, which has fixed the problem for most impacted avast users.
