Save partial scan?

My scans are running so slowly, that I’d like to perform partial scans when it’s convinient. Then re-start the scan some other time.

Is there a way to do that, or will any new scan always start over from the beginning?

Does Avast have any mechanism for remembering what it’s done so that it does not rescan all the same files every time I run a scan?

No, I’m afraid it’s not possible (except for avast! Screensaver, which indeed starts from the same folder it was interrupted the last time).

I don’t know how much and what kind of data you have on your computer, but maybe you could lower the sensitivity a bit - to make the scans faster?

For the moment, I’ve switched from thorough to standard and it looks like I’ll complete a scan in less than 2 hours. I have the desire however, to do as much as possible to assure 100% cleanality (sic), and would like to run thorough, including archives, at least once. But at the moment that’s taking an increadible amount of time and running my cpu so hard for so long that it overheats and shuts down.

OK, I think I’ll just take it as it comes now. I posted in an existing thread on a topic and someone told me that I had to start a new thread because it was confusing to have my problem included in another thread on the same subject. I’ll check both places now and will only post in one place in the future. Thanks for any help in any place.

Hey wait a minute - this is a completely different subject than the other thread !!!

Suit yourself. But the way I see it, the reason you are posing the question you pose in this thread is because of the slow scanning. If the slow scanning issue is solved, you don’t so much need this one answered, true?
Chicken or egg.

It seems to me you should deal with the core issue first, deal with ancillaries later.

No, not really; and I think I’m spending too much time responding to theological questions on posting generally. I even gave a longer response in the other thread - regarding the philosophical underpinnings of my preferred approach to scanning.

It’s not really chicken or egg - I value efficiency, and side-arguments about preferences on combining or disconnecting issues reduces efficiency compared with just getting good, direct answers to my questions.

Well, apologies. All the issues seemed combined to me. You have an AV that appears unable to complete a thorough scan in a reasonable time, perhaps not at all. Having sorted out how to post this issue, you started your own thread, My Slow Running, which I responded to, and I also saw that you'd started the thread on Save Partial Scan. It seemed to me that the reason for this thread was because of the slow scan problem you posted originally. Still does. Now I see from your recent reply in "My Slow Running" that you would rather wait for someone else to help you. It's not an argument about combining or disconnecting issues reducing efficiency; it's actually an attempt to improve efficiency. You have a problem with a stalled scan, an overheating computer, and you start two other threads. Efficiency would be fixing one issue at a time. But I guess if you don't see it that way, there's no need for me to persist. The other thread you refer to above is about not wanting the resident protection - inherent in Avast, to start with the computer.(All I'll say about that is, if you don't want a resident AV, don't install a resident AV.)

I have provided some details regarding scan time and a possible work around for your problem in your other thread.
Please refer to http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37857.0 and perhaps to save confusion post all further comments in regard to scan times and partial scans to that thread.

Thanks for the response. I now understand that I can partially scan by selecting folders / sectors.
