Says real time shield turned off

Every time i start my computer it shows an error in the Avast icon, when i have a look at it it shows that the real time shield is turned off.

If i go to click repair it wont let me, but if i wait 1-2 mins it fixes itself.

Anyone have an idea why this is happening at all? ::slight_smile:

What is your operating system, the cpu, and the RAM of this computer?
What Avast version? When was this installed?
What AV was used before Avast was installed?

Windows XP

AMD Athlon 64x2 duel core processor 4000+

2gig ram
Avast 5.0.677 release date 19/11/2010

havent used anything but Avast for years

Could be that you have an ex amount of startup’s which is slowing the loading of avast.
You should also hide your email so as not to be spammed.

Try getting the Avast services to load after the other services.
This can be found in the settings>troubleshooting area.

Has this recently started happening, or has it been so for a while?
How recently did you update to version 5?

Any other unusual computer behaviour? Any new programs installed recently? Any other security programs installed?

It has been happening for about 3-4 months

I would say i started using version 5 when my last registration ended and it shows the date 21/8/10

Only other program would be windows firewall

Sometimes a complete re-install can solve these sorts of issues. But do try delaying the loading of the Avast services, first, or also highly recommended is to trim your startup list (programs that auto-start with Windows, which in many cases don’t need to) as recommended by craigb.

The specs should enable a fast-running XP, so you probably do have a lot of programs starting with Windows. Worth checking.

For a full reinstall I suggest:

-Download the latest full install file from Avastdotcom and save it to your desktop, or a purpose-created folder.
-Download the Avast Uninstall Utility and save it.
-Go offline.
-Uninstall Avast using Add/remove programs. Reboot. If there were any problems with uninstalling, reboot into safe mode.
-Run the uninstall utility. Reboot.
-Install Avast from the file you just downloaded. Reboot.
-When the icon shows normal in the system tray, reconnect to the net, check for updates, re-register.

A quick reminder that if you decide to reinstall avast make sure that you run the removal tool that Tarq57 has refered for the 4.8 and 5.0 versions after you have deleted though add remove programs

I hope you are running XP Service Pack 3 as it provides many Critical Updates and performance enhancements. ???
