scan complete in 5 seconds and no files, folders or data tested. Help!

I have the free avast version.

Today, I downloaded updates (do it manually) and updated my version of avast for the newest one then tried to run the scan again. The clock starts counting and after 5 seconds it says scan complete and no virus found, but no files, folder or data have been scanned. The yellow bar hasn’t moved and all the bits underneath say 0 so it isn’t scanning. I’ve run it repeatedly in quick and full mode but get the same result - no scan.

It also says on the summary page an ! and yellow by virus definitions, even though I’ve just updated this (and have clicked on fix to fix it and it still shows up yellow).

I haven’t changed the settings etc apart from to switch updates to manual, but have had that as long as I’ve been running avast and have never had any problems until now. Everything was fine until I ran updates!

I have WindowsXP and no other antivirus apart from malwarebytes.

Please keep replies as non technical as possible please! I’ve googled this but haven’t understood any of it!

2 malwarebytes scans have said no problems.

In task manager I have avastSvc.exe running and the memory usage changing even though I’m not doing anything and avastUI.exe running also.

see if avast repair changes anything

controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall > repair option > wait a couple of minutes and reboot

That seems to have fixed it - scan is running but slowly. Thank you ;D

What do you think the problem was?
