Scan files based on Reputation ?

Hi,

I was looking at ideas on “feedback.avast.com” and I found this :

https://feedback.avast.com/responses/scan-files-based-on-reputation-cloud

I personally think it should be a great improvement.

And you, what do you think about it ? Should avast! make something like that ?

anything with “cloud” in it is a bad idea (never know where the info goes, what happens…) personally I disable all cloud-related scans & settings and I even set my FW to restrict access of AV to the web (AV is only allowed out when updating since we aint got no choice)

and besides, how exactly is “reputation” defined anyway?
based solely on file name? (if so what if file’s been modified & infected?)
based on hash? (that would seriously drag on scan time especially when doing so over the web)

Hi,

You are doing a BIG mistake by disabling Cloud Services … wow, do you even know how the 2 services work ?
“never know where the info goes, what happens…” >> Click on Maintenance and you’ll have info about streaming updates (status and last update received).
No Reputation is based on many things … Please know that disabling the Reputation Service dramatically affect the AutoSandbox …

For me it’s quite simple : Avast! without its Cloud is like living on earth without Sun.

yup because the sun had nothing to do with evolution of life over the past billion years, and only now did we find out that it existed
lol

time to leave the clouds & get back to earth man. by very definition the cloud is anonymous, the only info we get (if we scrutinize closely) is the IP of the servers which of course vary each time. not to mention what you risk if one of the MANY servers gets compromised, good luck then

leaving aside files with verified digital sigs (maybe) the only rational thing to do is treat any unknown file as suspicious regardless of source. no way I’m gonna trust a file just cause some invisible man in the sky, uh I mean in the clouds, says it’s good

anyway what IS reputation based on? there can’t be an infinity of criteria, if the file aint analyzed by name or by hash, then what else?
