Hi All,

#1 I have 35.2 GB on my HD. However, when I click “Scan” and do a “Full System Scan,” using the default choice left of the Scan Start button, the “amount of data tested,” at the end, is given as 22.0 GB. Why aren’t all files scanned? Why are the remaining 13.2 GB overlooked? My OS is Win XP Home SP3.

#2 When you create a “Custom Scan” to make avast scan daily, you are asked to NAME the scan. If you don’t its listed as an “Unnamed Scan.” I now have 3 “Unnamed Scans” in my list of choices left of the Scan Start button. HOW do I delete them?

#3 If you want to run a “Full System Scan” and use the default menu choice, which in my case, results in 22.0 GB being scanned, avast doesn’t use the default parameters. To do this full scan DAILY you must create a custom scan & enter a name for the scan. I typed in “Full System Scan,” didn’t. THIS 2nd “Full System Scan” only searched 16.2 GB and NOT the 22.0 GB that the default “Full System Scan” does! I now have TWO “Full System Scan” choices. One gives 22.0 GB and the other 16.2 GB. This is weird.

#4 When I look at “Scan History” I can click on a line and see the scan data, line by line. However, the button named “Detailed Report,” on the right, is greyed out? Why is this?

#5 The different scans that are installed as “defaults” during the install, that appear left of the Scan Start button, MUST have scan parameters assigned to them. HOW do you SEE what they are, and possibly change them? I’m referring to the “Full System Scan,” and “Quick Scan” choices, and any others whose parameters may differ from these that are probably used most often.

Thank you !!!

First:

  • With a resident on-access antivirus like avast, the need for frequent on-demand scans is much depreciated. For the most part the on-demand scan is going to be scanning files that would be otherwise be dormant or inert. If they were active files then the on-access file system shield would be scanning them before being created, modified, opened or executed.

I have avast set to do a scheduled weekly Quick scan, set at a time and day that I know the computer will be on. If for some reason my system wasn’t on, no big deal I will catch up on the next scheduled scan.

In the default Full System Scan not all files are scanned - archives (packers) aren’t scanned (some exceptions, those that are executable), and some file types, commonly files that don’t present a risk and or aren’t targeted, text files and some media files, etc.

Personally I wouldn’t change the default Quick and Full System Scans, that way you know the default settings. Do what you have create a custom scan - but give the scan a Name when you create it otherwise you will get the unnamed scan issue.

@@@@
If you use the avastUI > Scan option to open the Scan section, You will see the Quick Scan as the first in line, use the drop down list to access other scans. See image1, a list of my scans I have some custom scans listed.

Once you have selected the scan, click the Settings… text below the Description text. here you can for instance change the Scan Name and Description for your Untitled Scans (rather than delete them) and modify your scan settings. I you want to delete a custom scan that you created there is an option to delete it once you have selected it, image2.

Files that are in the Persistent and Transient cache may not be scanned, there are exceptions for transient, when a new VPS update is received, transient cache is effectively zeroed.

This isn’t an exhaustive list just some examples, but it would make a difference and a note that I too am an avast user like yourself.

Wow DavidR !!

THANK YOU & THANK YOU again! You’ve solved almost every problem I’ve had with the new avast Pro Antivirus 2014. Only thing left that is still an “unknown” is HOW do you delete your history of past scans? As it is now, since I do a full scan daily, I may have to scroll down for an hour to see the data on my latest scan after several months. Kidding, but you get my meaning?

As I understand your note, there are, to put it simply, 2 types of files, one are those in use frequently, and those sitting on the “golden shelf” covered in dust? avast scans the more frequently used ones, and not the others. The “real time shield,” (or watever), monitors the “golden shelf” and reports when something there should be looked at in a full system scan?

I up-dated the daily scan I use on my PC that runs 24/7 on-line. I made it with the exact settings used by the default “Full System Scan,” BUT I added an extra. Instead of the “Rootkits (Quick Scan)” used by the default, I changed it to “Rootkits (Full Scan)” to enhance the thoroughness of the scan, albeit at the cost of an xtra few minutes scan time. When I first ran this, the result was surprising! Whereas the default “Full System Scan” gave the “amount of data tested” as 22.0 GB on my 35.2 GB HD, the new scan, with “Rootkits (Full Scan),” gave the “amount of data tested” as 59.5 GB! Wow! Where did all those Jigabytes come from? I use Piriform Defraggler to de-frag my HD, and its HD analysis is giving me the 35.2 GB used number. Maybe it is in error? Is there another utility to tell you how much is in your HD?

Again, THANK YOU for your much appreciated help!

Its there but under a couple of layers of dust.
avastUI > General > scroll right down to the Maintenance Section - here you can reduce or increase the duration you keep logs - or Clean scan history completely.

Well there is a rootkit scan that happens 8 minutes after boot, but that one doesn’t help when you don’t switch your system off ;D

DavidR,

THANK YOU again. I looked into the 59.5 GB problem, i.e., the “amount of data tested” by avast as compared to the 25.2 GB my HD has on it. The 35.2 number IS correct. I found I just had to double-click on “My Computer” and my HD stat were shown there. They also say I’m only using 35.2 GB. I wonder why the avast scan result is WAY high? Strange, huh?

Thank you!

The avast scan if you have archive being scanned, unpacks these archives to be able to scan the contents, so avast counts the total for the contents of archives not just the compressed size of archives.

oh… so THAT’s the secret, packing and unpacking! Oh, BTW, a typo in my post you may have noted… My HD has 35.2 GB on it, not 25.2 GB. My alzheimer’s at work.

THANK YOU!

You’re welcome.

Not packing ‘and’ unpacking (as in double counting) it is just the unpacking of an archive that is counted, not the packed size and the unpacked size, just the unpacked size (for the files scanned).

Purchased an MX922 Canon All-In-One - I received errors upon installing and after a lengthy support session with Canon Support, no solution could be found. After continuing to search around I came about the following post which fixed the problem. Below is the original solution I found, however, I only had to remove Avast (not reinstall and remove again) and it did finally allow the Canon drivers to load correctly and install the Quick Menu, which Avast was unknowingly blocking. Avast Support and Canon Support need to work this out - it was a very time consuming and lengthy process to finally figure out Avast was the problem. Avast & Canon Support - TAKE NOTE!

Don’t know if this will help but I found a solution for it not installing on my systems.
Fresh install of win 8.1 pro and it installs fine
add avast anti virus and it works but if you try to install it fails
turn off all features of Avast and it still fails to install
uninstall Avast and reboot and it will still fail to install
found out Avast does not uninstall and blocks the network scanner selector program from setting the connection
Solution albeit strange and can’t confirm if it works for other anti virus software is:
uninstall Avast
install Avast again
uninstall Avast right after the fresh install
Appears to be the only way to get Avast to completely uninstall
Load all your Canon drivers and test
If all work and they probably will
Install Avast
Again, this may be similar issue with other anti virus software but can’t confirm
Had to do this proceedure on a laptop, a tablet, and 3 desktops and it has worked on all of them
good luck and hope it helps
