Scan Results won't allow viruses to be removed

I am a relatively new user of the Avast free antivirus program and have been flummoxed by its inability to do anything with viruses and trojans it discovers. The Scan Results screen that appears after a virus check has columns for Action and Result, but the action field does not respond to user input. Am I missing something or is the free version of this program incapable of removing viruses it finds?

I am running the program on 64-bit Windows 7 ultimate with an i7 930 processor and 12GB of memory.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Could you please attach a screenshot of the scan results?

Hi DJB:

Screenshot attached.

you have no detection…this is a scan error report
avast is a antivirus program and will only take action on infected files…they will also be given a malware name when detected

files that can not be scanned are just that, no more no less and does not mean they are infected
avast is just telling you it could not scan those files and the reason why…it is normal to have some files that can not be scanned’

some of them may be located in temp folders…if you do some house cleaning you may remove some of those

run these and see

ATF cleaner http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option or you can download it here http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html
CCleaner use slim installer / no toolbar  http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

“Error: The file is a decompression bomb. (42110)” normally describes a large archive. You don’t have to worry.
“Error: The archive is password protected (42056)” means exactly this: The archive is password protected and avast don’t knows the password.

Hi:

Thanks. I assumed that I should be worried by the supposed decompression bombs. Appreciate your assurance that this is a false alarm.

You’re welcome!

DJBone

it is not a false alarm…
avast is just telling you that this file will unpack to a very large file so the scan engine will not unpack and scan it

they also seem to be located in your recyle bin… so try empty the bin and they should be gone

Hi!

Well I am having the same problem, but Avast has detected viruses.

Your problem is you are asking avast to scan memory and it is finding unencrypted virus signatures there by the MBAM service ‘process.’ These are memory blocks and not physical files so can’t be moved to the virus chest or deleted.

Solution don’t scan memory.

Alright thanks!

You’re welcome.
