scan results

On running a full scan I get a list of files that show “unable to scan” it seems that most are Adaware files, what action should I take with these? JF ???

None - simply ignore them. They are password protected (which doesn’t mean they’re any “bad” - they are OK), so avast! is just telling you that it couldn’t scan them.

If you have done some scans with adaware and done some deletions/fixes, etc. it saves a copy of what it deleted so you can restore it is there is a problem, these are also protected in this way.
So you could do a little house keeping and delete some of the backups that are over say a week old (you would have noticed if they had an adverse effect by then) this should reduce the number of files not scanned in your list.

Thanks guys for prompt replies. Igor you suggest deleting some older backups, excuse my ignorance do you mean delete them from the Avast log? I am not too “literate” on this issue. Thanks again Jim

No, I suggested doing nothing
There are no backups (of avast) - avast! is just telling you that it wasn’t able to scan certain (password protected) files, nothing more. There’s certainly no need to worry about it, it’s perfectly normal.

I had his same proplem when I scanned also packed files and I also use AD-AWARE.
I assume that it´s normal notice when using Avast and Ad-Aware?

I have a similiar problem, Avast can’t scan a file called silent_install[1].exe[upx] due to the upx file being corrupt. Should I be concerned?

It’s actually a different problem (the file is corrupted - not password protected), but I’d say you don’t have to worry about it (at least about the fact that it’s announced as corrupted). What file is it? What is its full path?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0XYBODEF\silent_install[1].exe[upx]

Not Igor but I, no the backups have nothing to do with avast, just that avast is trying to scan them and cant because they are protected by AdAware of Spybot S & D. It is in these programs that you need to delete old backups.
In adaware these are called Quarantined Objects (click on the big Padlock) and can be either deleted or restored.
In Spybot click the Recovery Icon where you can select items and purge them (delete backup).
I hope that is clearer for you?

Oriour: OK, the file is in your browser cache. It’s probably just some download you interrupted before it finished - so the file is really truncated. I think you can just ignore the warning. You can also empty the cache of your browser if you want to get rid of the file.

Okay, thanks Igor.

edit: I tried emptying both the mozilla cache and IE cache, the file still remains. Any other advice on how to get rid of the file?

Try this tool a good way of getting rid of multiple temp file locations.
CCleaner - Temp File Cleaner, etc.

The file location doesn’t show up on the list. I figure I’ll just ignore it, it’s gone unoticed for the better part for a year and doesn’t seem to have done anything. Thanks for the assisstance though.

It shouldn’t be a problem, after all as you say its been there for a year and avast simply said it couldn’t scan it (due to the upx file being corrupt), not that it was infected.

Good idea to clear out your cache and temp files more often than once a year though ;D

I decided to go back and try the idiot way of removing it, I hit the delete key on the files. So far it’s in the recycle bin, a similiar program has not replaced it, and I’m not seeing any problems.
