I started a standard scan and then went out for a while. Comming back I expected to see the scan finished and the results. But the scan was stopped, saying it had detected a virus and listing the options. I clicked “Move to chest” and it started up again. It found 3 more virus and stopped but I was there to get it going again right away. I now realize that I can’t go away and assume that it will run to its finish. Why can’t it be set to automaticaly move to the chest when it finds a virus and keeps running to the end of the scan and then tell you that you have 2,3 virus in the chest? Is this a dumb question???
I experience this as well. Wish it would do like you said instead of stopping.
Only the Pro version supports that.
A few AV manufacturers make free versions of their AV, eg: Avira, AVG, Avast etc.
The free version is always limited in some way (otherwise nobody would pay for the pro. The company needs to make money from something.)
Some AV’s part-cripple their detection or cleaning ability. Avast has decided that automatic malware handling and scheduled scanning (and a couple other features) are limited in the free version. (Full detectio/cleaning ability is one thing that makes it consistently be considered among the best.)
Search the forum for a workaround, but I do it by placing an EICAR file at the beginning of the scanned area, and answer the resulting message “do not show me next time” and then it will finish and present the results at the end of the scan, for you to process then.
I do the same thing that Tarq57 does.
A link to the file is here.

RoRo 8)
When avast 5.0 is finally released this will change, where automated actions can/will be pre-set…
Actually, there’s a reason for this. I have occasionally found this annoying when, for example, I was copying files to it over the network from an untested customer’s computer as a backup, and Avast found a booger, and consequently stopped the whole computer from doing anything at all. The network file transfer that I had intended to have finish overnight hung up. I was a bit upset.
I later learned the reason for it. A client of mine was using AVG (yuck! gag! barf!) and got a notice from AVG that a virus had been detected. Before she could finish reading the message, the virus realized it was busted, and shut down the computer.
Avast freezes the computer to be “in charge” more than the virus. It’s true that this behavior has its downsides, but equally true that it is worth the irritation.
By the way, when Avast 5.0 is “finally released” it will be kick-butt like all of the Avast products, because Alwil doesn’t rush stuff onto the market prematurely like Micro$oft and most of their buddies. Avast sings with Mr. Roger, may he rest in peace: “I like to take my time to do it right.” Long live the memory of Fred Rogers. Even if you couldn’t handle his extreme calm, he was undeniably one of the kindest and “best” to walk this earth.
So be patient. It’ll be released when it’s completely wonderful. And you’ll love it.
