I am new to avast and after trying to run two scans need help. I have XP service pack 3 using trend micro and spybot. While running avast scan the scan stops at about 5% and freezes the screen. What do I do?

Your problem almost certainly stems from having two resident AV installed.
Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

However, some other info might help:
What were the two scans (boot-time scan, on-demand, thorough sensitivity, etc.) ?
Where does it appear to stop, e.g. what folder ?
What is in that folder (large media files, etc.) , any exceptionally large files ?
By freeze, does the mouse pointer also freeze ?
Is the avast tray icon rotating ?
