Scan stops working

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help or has experienced this. I’m running Avast Free on a Windows 10 laptop and trying to run a scan, which starts normally and then disappears when it gets into the browser threats phase, roughly 5-10 seconds in. I mean the whole Avast window disappears and the scan appears to stop completely - the normal working in the background scan progress doesn’t appear. It’s as thought the programme crashes.

I’ve run a repair, uninstalled and reinstalled and the same issue has occurred each time. While uninstalled I ran a windows security scan which came back clear and have run Malwarebytes too. I’ve used Avast trouble free for over a year but did have a prompt first thing this morning that I was still protected but Avast needed to reboot when I tried to run the first scan (which was a first for me). I had removed some bloatware programmes prior trying to run this first scan. The crashing problem has occurred every time since.

Any ideas?

Hi,

You mentioned that you have already uninstalled, however, it is not clear if you used the uninstall utility.
Could you please use the uninstall utility as well as manually deleting Avast folders.
Please try the following:
Download and run the uninstall utility from the link below:
https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/10

Next,
Delete files manually: https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/94

once completed,

Reinstall Avast Antivirus:

Download and run the relevant installation file from the link below:
https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/87/

It might also be a good idea not to have any other anti-virus type program running at the same time as Avast.

Please report back with your results.

A lot of people are experiencing it right now as there may have been a bug on the recent update released by the software. In due time what I could advice is to not use the Smart Scan feature for now as this is the feature at fault. If you would like to do a scan on your computer for now is that. You can use the “Quick Scan”. It would be under > Protection > Virus Scan > Custom Scan.

Avast has acknowledged the problem and is working on a fix.

Hi,

This should now be fixed (via micro update).
Fixed version: 19.8.4793
Please make sure to update Avast Premium Security (open Avast > Menu > Settings > General > Update > ‘Check for updates’)
Restart PC
Try again to ‘Run Smart Scan’
If the issue persists, wait 24 hours and try again.

That’s not the version I see? Thanks
