Scan, with options on how to deal with viruses after the scan?

Is it possible to run a scan without having the program display a pop-up asking you for an action while you scan, thus halting the scan?

For scanning large disks I’m used to putting the scanner on while I’m away then get a report with any infected file at end and given a selection on what to do with them.

Been trying to search the forums and look in settings on the program, but I can’t find any way to turn off in-scan selections and change it to a post-scan selection on what to do with infected files (nothing, delete, repair, move to chest etc…)

I am running Avast Home 4.7, build Aug2007 4.7.1029 using ActiveSkin 4.2.7.3

At first, right click the icon on the traybar, select “start Avast! antivirus”;
Then setup the area that will be scanned;
Begin to scan;
If avast detects a virus, an alert window will show. Check “don’t show”. No alert window will show from now on till the task is completed.
When avast complete scan task, a result window will show. You can treat detected files from it.

Thanks for the answer, but not completely what I was looking for.

If I start say a 8 hour scan in the morning before I leave, and the first virus is detected after 2 hours that tip won’t help much, 75% will still be unscanned by the time i get home after 6 hours of Avast idling for input.

Mmm, try to run a Screen Saver Scanner,
Home edition can automatically treat infected files in such a case.

These advanced automated options are only available in the Pro version. This is a limitation of the Home (free) version that it has interactive input requirement, there have to be differences in the Home/Pro version and this is one of them, the programmers have to eat ;D

Unlike other free AVs avast isn’t crippled to try to get you to upgrade to the pro paid version, avast home is restricted in the interactive action requirements. The Pro version gives a lot more flexibility and the scan would follow the settings and exclusions, etc. of the regular scan.

With the different levels of protection (Web Shield, Internet Mail, P2P and Instant Messaging) and the fall back of the Standard Shield, I find the need for scheduled scans lessened. I prefer to do a manual scan with my regular weekly maintenance tasks.

I suspect you are also doing a thorough scan and possibly with archives selected also, this can take a considerable time. I have only ever done a through scan with archives once shortly after installation just to ensure a clean start state, but with XP for example avast will do a boot-time scan after installation if you select it, this I believe will be quicker and reasonably effective. Like everything in life things are a compromise.

Archive (zip, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned. Thorough is also by its design very thorough and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate.

No, it will stop scanning and alerting there is an infected file. Only on Professional version you can set the automated actions for the screen saver module.

No, only in Professional version (see picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13315.msg112285#msg112285).

In Home version you can check the option “Don’t show this window again” as soon as the first virus warning appears, and click on “No action” button. This way, nothing will be done and you will be presented the results at the end (and you can perform actions from there).

Or you can use Silent Mode:

Left click the ‘a’ blue icon.
It will start On-access protection

Click on Internet Mail and then on Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and select Silent Mode and the default answer No. This will send the file (email) to Chest.
But take a look here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28088.msg229736#msg229736

Do the same for the and Outlook/Exchange plugin.
The answer Yes in Silent Mode keeps the virus in the file or into the message (attach) and continue the scanning. You can’t configure ‘delete the infected file’ in the Home version.

You can do the same for Standard Shield provider, but it won’t be a good idea…

Silent mode in the case of the WebShield provider simply means that avast will keep pressing the “Abort connection” button for the user automatically.

Thanks DavidR and Tech, those were the answers I were looking for.

I have to consider upgrading to Pro now :slight_smile:

No problem glad we could help.

Welcome to the forums.

So… what are you waiting for? 8)
