In order for me to run Scandisk in Windows 98 I must uncheck all the Avast items in msconfig and restart the computer, run Scandisk and Defrag, if necessary, then reverse the procedure to start Avast protection. If I don’t disable Avast, Scandisk keeps starting over because it says something is writing to the disk. I tried just disabling it via clicking on the icon, but apparently that does not completely shut it down.
I haven’t tried scandisk in Windows 98 protected mode for years but what you say sounds right.
Suggestion: Run Scandisk in DOS mode
Hi,
I can only tell that I have Ẅ98SE and I run a daily ScanDisk check on my partitions with my Avast Standard and Web Shields enabled and without needing to touch msconfig or anything else.
My regards
I haven’t used win98 + scandisk for many, many, years. What I do remember that it was always advisable to do the three finger shuffle (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and shutdown all non essential applications. If I didn’t do that then it would get to 3-10%.
This was when I was using AVG, well before I used avast, so this isn’t an issue exclusive to avast.
Thanks so much for all the replies. I forgot about the 3 finger shuffle, that would be easier and quicker. I will soon upgrade this computer to XP so I can run the same programs on it as my newer machine that already has XP. My XP machine is out of commission with a bad hard drive. Thankful I kept this old Gateway for backup. I used AVG on my other machine. AVG no longer supports Windows 98. Took me some searching to find a virus program that would support 98. When I update this computer to XP, I will keep Avast on it.
No problem, glad I could help.
