I suggest that you check the sensitivity of Standard Shield, set it to Normal the higher the sensitivity the more it will scan. Personally I don’t think it wise to disable it, this is the time when if you have a virus that it will be trying to get established.
I would also suggest that you review the programs that you allow to run on start-up, the more you have the more files avast is likely to scan. Many programs install and set themselves to run on boot, media players are a point in question when you only need it to be running when you click on a media file.
Maybe this is what he means?
After reading the posts, I checked my settings, and I have the box checked to test memory during startup. What is Avast doing when it does this? Is this something one should have checked, or can we bypass this option safely? I can understand why something like this would happen upon first startup of Avast when the computer is turned on, but it also occurs when Avast is running and you simply want to review the settings. Don’t think I understand all I know - or don’t know - about this feature. Comments from one of the moderators would be much appreciated here…Thanks…Jim
It scans the processes in the memory (the executables and other filles running, uploaded into memory).
It you’re starting avast and you’ll make a scan, the first important thing to know is that in the memory there isn’t any virus running.
Other antivirus do the same or little different (AVG scans the memory at the beggining of an on-demand scanning).
If you use avast permanently at background (resident), you can uncheck this option while opening avast antivirus interface.
Thanks, Tech…I think I’ll uncheck this since Avast starts up and continues to run in background whenever I turn my computer on. This way it’ll speed things up when I just want to check my settings. Presumably this memory check will function at initial startup even though I’ve turned this option off - won’t it?..Jim
Unchecking this won’t stop the scan activity only the memory element of it and that part I think is more important as it could detect viruses loaded into memory.
What is the sensitivity setting of Standard Shield.
I suggest that you check the sensitivity of Standard Shield, set it to Normal the higher the sensitivity the more it will scan. You din't say what yours was or if you had changed it to the default 'Normal' setting. This is likely to have a greater effect than not doing the memory check.
Check settings through the proper option on the ‘a’ blue system icon menu.
You don’t have to ‘run’ (open) avast.
You’re disabling just on-demmand memory scanning but not the startup items scanning.
avast! does not scan memory at startup (on-access) but just startup items (that could be considered the same for normal users, you won’t be infected at Windows startup).
Shortcuts to scan memory could be found on ‘FAQ’ in my signature.
No i dont mean scan memory at startup - I unchecked that after the 1st boot. The Only programs i have running at startup are: AnyDVD - Avast - Microsoft Anti-Spyware - and ObjectDock.
I run a full Avast scan every time i diconnect from the Internet ( on dial-up) ??? and i run both Microsofts and Trend anti-spyware. So i think i’ll be O.K. not running avast on Startup. Is this possible, as i cannot find anywhere in Avast on how to turn this Off.

As we wrote, there is not a possibility of disabling avast running (scanning) startup items when Windows loads.
You can fully disable avast and its services, but not this.
In fact, I see no reason to disable… if you boot only once a day, why disabling the only time avast will scan these programs?
If you have residents both the antivirus (avast) and the antispyware (microsoft), why running on-demmand scanning after disconnecting?
Seems paranoid…
O.K. thanks for the replies, i guess i’ll have to put up with it, I usually turn the P.C. Off when i’m finished with it, So i’ll boot-up about 5 times a day. and i always scan the computer when ive been on the Internet, just in case anything slips past the AV or the Spyware program.

Try hibernating if you’re turning on and off that many times a day.
Start up is almost instant!
