scanning issue

I am using Avast home free edition, while upon completion of the scan I was given the normal “action” when I clicked remove all it had came back with the notation “error occured” and didnt clear the infections that the scan had found. How can I correct this? Thanks.

Are you using Windows XP/Vista?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
If infected files are found, it’s safer to send them to Chest instead of deleting them.
This way you can further analysis them.

scheduled boot time scan with the same result, I even did a scan in “safe mode” Isn’t this the same thing since both won’t allow the OS to load? Or does it mean that Avast won’t work in “safe mode”?
most of the infected files are located in the recycler. Went to : start> run > regedit > edit > search the name of file > delete Don’t want to delete something in the registry that might disable my system.

Furthermore I can see the logic why it would be wiser to move the found infections to the chest it can be analyzed by me AND virus lab. But what is most perplexing is why when I chose “delete/remove all” when the infection was first found it took until the scan finished and THEN it reported that the 'Actions " that I chose could not be completed? I understand archive files that are password protected cannot be scanned but deleteing/removing infections had never been a problem in the past.

My scan just finished and again the problem persists it found infections but it won’t moveto chest / delete noyhing. In fact the last page where " result of last scan " clicked on the “action” menu and the drop down is all greyed out. Hmmm. TBW running xp home SP3 build 2600

No, avast at boot time loads before than compared with Safe Mode times.

avast can be run on-demand at safe mode.

avast Home works that way… wait the scanning to finish and then apply the actions, afaik.
avast Pro acts (could be set to) automatically after the infection is detected.

I really do appreciate all the assistance you’ve given me but my main issue still hasn’t gone away. That is that no matter how I scan weather it be in safe mode, boot time scan or booted, the action menu remains greyed out and won’t do anything.

Thanks.

-= The file could probably be in use or a system file… What was the location of the file…?

Can you post a screenshot of it?

I would upload a screen shot to u does this forum have the capabilities to upload a screen shot or do I have to use a 3rd party service?

When I ticked image it would not insert the screen shot, I have the screen shot in mspaint.

What are the procedures to upload a screen shot to u is it email or other form?

Thanmks.

The first files, avast can’t scan files that are password protected, it doesn’t know the password.
There are many legitimate reasons why a file was password protected. For instance, Lavasoft Ad-aware and SpyBot store their data in a password-protected ZIP archives (to prevent other similar tools from messing up with them). It’s really nothing to worry about - it’s normal.

In AdAware and S&D, when you fix/remove things it keeps backup/recovery information so you can restore anything that was mistakenly fixed/removed, etc. After a reasonable time your system has suffered no adverse effects, you can get rid of the older recovery/backup points. This should reduce the number of protected files.

The last ones, on recycle bin, maybe could be vanished by emptying the recycle bin. Did you test it?

TYVM the problem did exist in the recycle bin I had cleaned out some old files and simply forgot to empty the recycle bin, even with the evidence staring right at me (recycler = recycle bin). DUH… :-[ :-[ :-[

It was a case of not seeing the forest for the trees.

Sometimes it takes a second look from a second person to point out the obvious.

Thanks.
