Scanning of Incoming E-mails

Window Version: Windows XP SP2
Processor: Celeron 2.4 GHz
Avast! Version: 4.6 Home Version
Build JUL2005 (4.6.691)
VPS File: Compilation Date: 10/27/2005
File Version: 0543-2
Other AV software: none
Firewall: Kerio Personal Firewall 4
Anti-spyware: Spybot
Ad-Aware
CW Shredder
E-mail Client: Outlook Express
Internet Connection: Dial-up
ISP: Earthlink

I apologize in advance because I suspect that this is not a problem unique to Avast!, but rather something in my system, but I’d appreciate any help I can get…

The problem is that incoming e-mails are not being scanned. Outgoing e-mails are being scanned, as evidenced by the little scanning icon in the systray, but no icon shows up when receiving e-mail. As further indication that no attempt is being made to scan incoming e-mail, I note that the Kerio firewall does not ask for permission for Avast! to scan the incoming messages, which it should do.

To date I have tried the following:

  • sent a large file to myself to verify that the incoming scan was not simply occurring too quickly to be seen

  • turned off the Kerio firewall while receiving messages

  • checked the settings of my e-mail ports (25 incoming, 110 outgoing)

To date, I’ve had no success.

The reason I believe it is not related to Avast! is that previous to installing Avast!, I had been using AVG, and experiencing the same problem. I finally gave up on AVG and switched to Avast!, only to encounter the problem again.

So, like I said, I suspect this problem is not truly an Avast! problem. So, again, I apologize if this post is inappropriate, but I could really use some advice if anyone out there has any ideas of what the problem might be.

Thanks.

If it is scanning outgoing email then the Internet Mail provider is at least working.

Ensure that you have selected to scan inbound email, see image.

Can you check the headers of your received emails it should contain something like this.
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0543-1, 25/10/2005), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

Check the Internet Mail provider, Detailed view and the Scanned Count and Last Scanned File should show if inbound emails are being scanned.

Does your dial up connection use an “accelerator” to give you the impression of a faster connection?
