Since updating Avast Free to 17.4.2291 on Windows XP the UI fails to load - however I was still able to scan individual files and folders from the right click menu - and scan progress would show. Since updating to 17.4.2294 this right click scan causes Avast to try - and fail - to load the UI - no scan progress shows but after a short while the syrupy female voice says “scan has been completed”. Does this mean that I still have scan facility from the right click menu - and should these scans show in logs somewhere?
Yes, everything works just fine in the background, it’s just that the UI refuses to load because something is wrong with the Terminal Services service - go and make sure it’s set on Automatic and that is started, and that in Event Viewer you don’t have a message telling you something got wrong with it.
Thanks - yes Terminal Services was the problem - and it would not start. I had to change the Terminal Services Image Path in Registry Editor - it was set to -k netsvcs and I changed it to -k DComLaunch. The UI is now loading OK. This may also help some others with similar problem where Terminal Services is not starting…
The terminal service ImagePath in the Registry Editor:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService]
ImagePath REG_EXPAND_SZ%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost -k DComLaunch
