Scared to Death

My avast! went off about 11pm last night. I’m running a compaq model 5bw with part time windows 98 SE (yes this was on when the alert jarred me awake) also had (I think) the Avast 4.5 version. My first glance was that it was the win32 in 2 C/Program Files one being Yahoo\ysr ppq6102 tmp- other being The Wild TArent\LFS\WildTargent\Cacache- My second glance was, what did avast reccomend ? To the vault, of which I did. Having the scare now of my life, I woke and started searching of what my next steps should be on the web. There weren’t a lot of answers that my little peabrain really understood, other than I did what I was not suppose to PANIC!! Early today went into work and pulled my 8+ all the while thinking Now what am I going to do? I’m out of answers at the moment, but I think avast! has bought me a litttle bit of time. Any suggestions from anyone. In advance thank you for any time that you are willing to spend. In the future, May we all be able to stay virus free!! I’m sorry I should mention that I’m on dial up and presently using mozilla firefox. Questions now being… Can I shut down and get some sleep and think a little clearer on this subject tommorrow or if something happens power outtage, I might be wise in looking tonight to be connected tomorrw. Sorry, lol just some sleepy humor!

If Avast! picked up the virus, and moved it to quarantine you should be fine. You can shut off your PC, and start it up tomorrow and run another manual scan by Avast. Also, run anti-spyware software (MS Antispyware, Lavasoft, etc.)

Staind is right, so you can stop now.

And since WildTangent is spyware that Spybot S&D is very good at finding, throw in a scan with that too.

Hi AZboyin WI,

Here is more info on it and removal instructions:

Reminds me of the time I almost crapped myself.

I had my machine’s surround sound cranked up because I was listening to music, once the music stopped I forgot my was still on. In the middle of the night:
YOUR ANTIVIRUS HAS BEEN UPDATED!

Never flew out of bed faster, and woke up half the people in my house.

LOL, ams … I’d bet half the people in your house were not impressed! ;D 8)

Hi,

I do not know what to believe anymore about Wildtangent being spyware or not. Read the artcle by clicking the link.

Hi Justin,

Admittedly there is debate on this issue and I know Wildgames denies the allegation, but they do admit to collecting anonymous information. They also say it is not possible for their software to automatically install itself but that they “partner” with companies like HP, Dell, Compaq, Logitech, AOL and others.

What this mean is that if you buy a Dell or Compaq it comes pre-installed with a data collection engine that is not disclosed to you. And if you install AIM you also install Wildtangent. That’s been my experience, anyway.

So, imho, it is spyware but I understand others might disagree.

Edit - btw, that link you posted is not a unbiased article. It is Wildgames’ official denial.

Hello,

I once had a strange experiance. I did not have any Wildtangent on my computer then one day I get a wildtangent notice and guess what the webdriver was installed and I know that I did not put it on myself and nobody else was using my computer. Seems strange to me. Oh and I hadn’t been on gaming sites like AOL, Yahoo, or MSN either.

Well, there are other on-line gaming sites that do use WildTangent and you most likely will not be told that WildTangent is part of the download to play the games. And if you are told, it will be buried in the “fine print” which almost no one reads. Some of these are those massive on-line role-playing games.
