I’ve used Avast on several machines for a long time and 4.8 has been particularly successful on Vista. I have a laptop running 4.8 due to expire on the 1st of July. I am horrified to read of all the problems with 5.0 on this forum even to the inability to register the new version.
I’ve never had to work as hard with any Avast version as is described in some of these posts. I’M VERY APPREHENSIVE about upgrading because my machine
is now operating perfectly. My sister upgraded her XP netbook over 4.8 with no problems YET except she can’t get hers registered. Vista is often a different
ballgame as I well know. Anybody else out there who has upgraded to 5.0 on a Vista 32 machine? Clean install (I’ve never had to do that with Avast for it
has always worked its magic) or load over 4.8?
C’mon… 100+ million users aren’t posting in forums any problem.
Version 5 is highly stable and give you much more protection than 4.8.
I suggest an installation from scratch:
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
Donna, they are correct. The majority of users do not have problems. I have 3 PC’s of which one is a Vista 32 like yours with no problems at all using Avast 5.0.
Most issues that come up on the forum usually are due to people not rebooting after installation, not uninstalling prior security software like antivirus prior to installing Avast, not setting up their firewall to let avast work properly, or they have malware on their system that they were not aware of previously.
We are here to help you and others, so please do not be afraid to upgrade or a clean install. The support for 4.0 will end by the end of this year, so you eventually will have to do it. The GUI in 5.0 is cleaner and scans run much faster. Try it and I think you will like it.
As usual all of you have come through with very good info. Thanks.
I haven’t loaded 5 yet but want to clear up one issue first. Does 5.0 Free need a registration key? If it does I think that is causing some confusion because Avast has not sent one to my sister and I need to know whether to expect one or not.

You can have the license sent but there’s an easier way to register in avast 5. Open up avast, go to the maintenance tab, and click on the registration tab. Then just fill out the form and you’re all set
Just wanted everyone to know that so far I am a happy user of 5.0 and I do like the UI better. I got brave and mostly I just believed in Avast and just
upgraded since I only have Windows firewall in place. Not a hitch!
I have two more desktops to go and both have PC Tools firewall. One is another Vista and the other is a 5year old XP. I know that in the past
PC Tools has worked well with Avast so I may just upgrade on both of these unless there are reasons why I shouldn’t.
