Schedule boot scan and pc hibernation

Hello,

A friend uses Avast home edition on windows XP SP2 and every time she schedules a boot scan it starts OK but when she comes back to the PC sometime later it seems to have gone into standy/hibernate mode.

Is this possible? I can’t see how the windows power settings can apply in boot mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks

IanM

Is it perhaps because the scan has completed ?
Check the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\aswboot.txt file that contains information on the boot-time scan.

Yes it could be that, I have already emailled to ask for aswboot.log, is it worth asking for the aswboot.txt as well?

Thanks,

IanM

You’re welcome.

If the scanning goes ok, if finishes and Windows starts. Then the power settings were applied.
If the scanning fails (or the computer has problems), maybe the BIOS power settings will be applied.

this is how she descibes it:-

“I tried the scan last night. I think my computer goes into standby/hibernate
mode. because when I arrive at computer the moniter is black I move the
mouse and the moniter says it is going to sleep. Then i have to push the
button on the front of the computer. A line of white goes across the bottom
of the screen like it is waking up and normally I have my cat screen but now
the screen is frozen with the white line on the bottom and I left it and
came back 15 minutes later and it was asleep again.Same thing happened and I
left it again”

and then later:-

“I just went upstairs, computer was silent, screen was black and once again I
hit the button on the front of the computer and the white line went across
the screen(it also says restarting windows) and then nothing. This is all it
ever does”

Now I re-read it maybe the PC won’t start up anymore! I assume the “button on the front of the computer” is the power button.

Are the computer fans working? Maybe the computer is turning off due to overheating.

I don’t know for sure but I can tell you that this PC was working OK before the boot scan. It is also left on 24/7 so I think a problem with fans would have showed itself before now.

I suggested the boot scan yesterday for no particular reason other than it has been over a year since she has ran any type of scan!

So, can you open the log and post it here like David asked on reply #1?

I emailled her and asked for
c:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\aswBoot.log

David mentioned
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\aswboot.txt

Should I ask for both files? Or is the log enough?

I hope she can boot into windows to get the file(s) !

I’ll look for this file:
\DATA\report\aswBoot.txt

OK I asked for both files

Don’t hold your breath though she takes ages to do this sort of stuff

Thanks for you help

IanM

You’re welcome. We’ll be here trying to help

Some variants of Beagle destroy avast installation.
I suggest you repair your avast installation.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Hi,

it looks like the boot time scan is not completing, would you agree?

since then she has run and completed a standard (in windows) scan - i’ll try and get the log for that.

Ian

Well, if this is the whole aswBoot.txt file - it looks like a virus has been detected, the boot-time scanner printed the message on the screen and waited for the user to select the action to perform.
So, it seems like it’s waiting for user input…

You can also post the file \Data\Log\aswBoot.log - it contains some other info.

Hi Igor,

There was no \Data\Log\aswBoot.log according to my friend.

I didn’t know the boot time scanner asked for user input.

I think I will get her to check again.

Thanks

Ian
