Hi. I installed your Free Avast Antivirus program yesterday, and must clarify some issues regarding its scheduling and related time issues, please. It seems to prefer running on time only when set for a once-only scan, whether simply set on Once only, or on Daily with all boxes cleared except the one day I’d like it run. However, I can’t get it to Quick Scan Daily with more than one day box checked. For example: Yesterday, I set it to run daily, every weekday and weekend, at 11:30 (to correspond with the military 11:30 a.m. time). So, today at around 11:10, I closed all my programs and waited, but nothing happened – no scan. What happened? Do I have to close up everything sooner than the twenty minutes leeway I allowed today? It ran on time today, however, when set on Daily for a 12:15 start, with all but one box cleared.
Problem Two: When running, the Quick Scan seems to function adequately, but stops at 99%, and reports that The Scan was Canceled. The readings look good enough, but I’m wondering if the program is functioning at full capacity.
I’m on Windows 10, 64-bit
HP Compaq Presario CQ50-210US, laptop
Chrome browser (in case that matters)
Thanks. I’ll appreciate whatever help anyone can provide.
When running a quick/full scan and leaving the toaster in the corner, the scan completes successfully. However, the toaster icon says “Scan Canceled - [insert number] usually 99%”.
The scan actually completes successfully but the toaster icon wrongly reports it as cancelled.
This is known bug and will be fixed when the toaster popups move to CEF.
Regarding the scheduling, are you sure that your computer wasn’t in sleep mode and/or running on battery power?
Thanks for responding, and for clarifying my concerns regarding the 99% issue. As for my scheduling problems: Yes, I’m sure my laptop was on. AC, plugged in. In fact, I was watching my screen to see if the scan would run on time, and to observe how it performed.
Hi. Any more suggestions? Today, the scheduled Quick scan didn’t run at all, so I moved it from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30. At about 1:10 or so, I checked the Antivirus Scan History. It reported a Quick scan today at 12:30:01, with all zeros in the Scan details column. Perhaps I interrupted the scan before any results could be detected and/or recorded. I’m now going to try rescheduling for later this afternoon, although I’m doubtful my new schedule will be followed, given Avast thinks it already ran today, and won’t run again until tomorrow.
Please advise me, if possible. I may have confused Avast by incorrectly setting its Parameters, although a once-only scan worked properly with the same Parameter settings. My main problem is not with Scan areas, but with setting the File Types. I don’t really want to specify file types. I’m particularly against “Content (thorough but slow),” but I also don’t want to bother with “file name extensions,” however fast they may be. Unfortunately, there’s no option to skip File Types (or really Parameters altogether) so I’m left indicating a preference for “name extension” minus a list of extensions.
Sorry for all my verbiage. I’m new to Avast. It’s definitely more complicated (at least for me) than Windows Defender, but maybe its complications help make it a potentially better security choice. ?
Scheduling hasn’t worked properly in years. It runs on time sporadically. Out of a given week mine probably runs twice on time. Been like that forever and this is on multiple computers that have been rebuilt a couple of times in the last couple of years. Windows 7 and Windows 10.
I don’t use the scheduling function and pretty much don’t run on-demand scans out side of beta testing and in relation to forum topics.
As has been said some find problems in scheduling scans. Some of these that I have seen in forums seems to be that the system doesn’t com out of sleep.
One area may well be in windows 10 if the user uses the fast startup from sleep (I don’t know if that is the correct terminology). If you have enabled the wake up the system to run the scheduled scan, this fast startup function to all intents and purposes avast doesn’t recognise that the system is in sleep mode.
Thanks for your informative reply. I’m guessing that despite the scheduling glitches, you trust Avast’s security components, particularly given you’ve stayed with it throughout two OSes. Good enough for me. Actually, I rescheduled it for 14:45 today, and it ran on time, with all Details showing (apparently) complete results. If not for your info regarding its scheduling problems, I’d speculate that Avast has trouble with non-default (military) a.m. settings. Oh, well.
Thanks to you again. From now on, I’ll enter a Quick scan schedule request into Avast’s time setting facility, but will otherwise mostly ignore it, if possible. !
Just to clarify my situation: My computer is always on during scans. It’s set to Never sleep, although I turn it off at night to reserve energy (so it gets plenty of rest!), and leave it on otherwise while I’m working with it.
That’s all. Thanks for responding, though. Happy day, night, etc.
Thanks for your input. It helps me to move along. Unfortunately, I’m still stuck a little on the search for an answer trail, but almost tired of it. My latest and probably last venture has been trying to activate Avast Quick Scans using Windows 10’s Task Schedule, as I did with Windows Defender. It seems tantalizingly close to working, but I’m not tech savvy and I’ll soon give up. I hope. Anyway, thanks very much.
