On the Avast Pro do you have to pay before you get the Scheduler? & Do you need to have the VRDB on all the time?
What exactly do you mean?
Scheduler is one of the features of avast! Pro. So, if you buy a license for avast! Pro, or if you are running avast! Pro in Demo mode (i.e. 60 days trial) - the Scheduler is there.
VRDB is (re)generated every 3 weeks by default. In between, there’s no real “running” - it just “sits” there. If you want to use VRDB at all… well, that’s up to you. Or do you mean something else?
We’ve been through the list of options on the system tray icon but could not find the scheduler in there, can you tell us where to find it?
Well, it’s slightly more complicated 
First, you have to start the “Enhanced User Interface”. So, select “Start avast! Antivirus” from the tray icon popup menu. If the Simple User Interface appears, rightlick on it for the menu to appear and select “Switch to Enhanced User Interface”.
Then, you have to options: either switch to Scheduler folder, create new event and select an existing task to be started by the Scheduler - or switch to the Tasks folder, possibly create a new task and set its scheduling in the task properties.
