Screen Refresh Problem

After running Avast Antivirus - HOME Edition successfully this is what happens:

  1. The memory test is carried out successfully.
  2. The Scanner for selection of folders or Drives does not come up. You have to Click on the “a” icon again.
  3. After scanning the drives if you select “Refresh” or “Copy” etc; from the Pop-up Menu obtained from the Right Click of the mouse on the desktop, that command remains permanantly till you shutdown the Computer. Why does this happen and what should be done to get over this. The refresh rate is set at 75 mhz.

Thanks. ???

Welcome to the forum.
We need some more information.
What operating System are you using? What other security software are you running?
Did you or do you have any other Antivirus program installed on your system before you installed avast! ?
If so which one and how did you remove it.

Menu, Display Remnants, Log Viewer Remnants, Graphics glitches, etc. - Menu, Display Remnants, Log Viewer Remnants, Graphics glitches, etc.

  • Edit the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini using Notepad [Common] section, add the following line to the section SunbeltKPFHack=2, save the file, you will be prompted by the avast! Self-defence module if this is OK answer Yes. Whilst this is primarily for Sunbelt or Kerio Personal Firewalls it may well work even if you don’t use either of these firewalls.

Thanks Bob3160,

This is the first forum where someone welcomed me before answering my query. It gives a very nice feeling. thank you very much.

Now as for the details of my system I have a AMD X86 based PC with 2 GB Ram and 1 GB Processor Speed. The Os is MS Windows XP. I have not installed any security software or any other anti virus excepting Avast HOME 4.8 with a valid License No. provided by them. (Avast). Another interesting point to note is that when I start A Game called “Flipwords” and return to the Desktop after closing the Game the menu remnants are also removed. But on re-clicking the Right mouse button the remnants re-appear. I hope the information provided by me will be helpful to you to provide a solution.

Your welcome. You'll find that this forum is a little different than most. :) Sorry I don't have an answer for your problem.

Have you tried what I suggested yet Ravi ?

Dear David R.

Thank you very much for the much needed help. Now the Refresh problem of Avast has been solved. Sorry for the delay in replying, mainly because of two reasons:

  1. Due my busy schedules last week and
  2. My fear or reluctance to tamper with System files like ini or bat etc;

Thanks again.

You’re welcome.

You will find in the forums that we don’t suggest things which are likely to harm your system.

The avast4.ini file isn’t a system file, but one that contains settings for avast.

Hey DavidR

Today is second time that I use your Hack on a troublesome desktop computer

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=47507.msg400843#msg400843

and again was delivered good outcome.

Much appreciated

Well it wasn’t me that originated the Hack but the Alwil team, I just tucked it away for posterity ;D

It is surprising that it overcomes some things which would appear to be unrelated.

What exactly does it do?

I mean, what does that entry in the INI tell avast! to do differently?

The first also see link in my Reply #2 gives more information by someone much more knowledgeable than I ;D

Thanks DavidR, I haven’t actually used it so have never read the links…maybe I should have…

 happy chappy downunder

In above case, I think perhaps – remnants of various sort(s) on a much used desktop
So also, happy client downunder

Also perhaps from usage – offhand or idiosyncratic or even erroneous firewall settings.

You’re welcome,
Bad news that avast has to cater for the inadequacies of some other applications; good news that they are able to compensate though, yeah for the most configurable AV, avast!
