Screen saver and ashServ.exe

I have avast! version 4.7 home edition on my Dell XPS M1210 laptop. I’m running Windows XP MCE 2005 Service Pack 2. Core 2 Duo T7200, 2GB RAM, 120GB hard disk.

I use an ordinary screen saver, but whenever it kicks off after the set idle time, I noticed that some computer activity also starts. After doing some testing, I found out that ashServ.exe also runs actively (i.e., uses CPU resources) once the screen saver activates.

(Note: I know about the avast! screen saver. I’ve unchecked the option to scan for viruses under the screen saver’s settings. And I don’t even have this set as my screen saver, which is why I’m bothered by this ashServ going active with the screen saver.)

Now, I’d like to ask:

  1. Is this normal?
  2. Is there a way to prevent ashServ from going active when the screen saver starts?

Thanks.

Two operations could be done at ‘screensaver time’:

  1. The creation of VRDB (virus recovery database): the ‘i’ icon on system tray. You can configure it to be created at idle time instead of screensaver (default).

  2. The on-demand scanning with avast screensaver module. This is not default, you must have been set this into Control Panel > Video > Screensaver > avast screensaver.

Can you check?
